Job summary

Job description

The Foreman (looking for MOT, Grading, Pipe, and Bridge) leads a crew engaged in the construction, replacement, or rehabilitation of bridge structures, including substructure, superstructure, formwork, reinforcing steel, and cast-in-place or precast concrete elements. This role requires close coordination with engineering staff to execute structural work to tight tolerances and applicable specifications, while directing a multi-craft crew across formwork, concrete, and rigging operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret structural plans, shop drawings, and specifications for bridge substructure and superstructure work.
  • Direct and coordinate daily activities of the bridge crew, including carpenters, laborers, and equipment operators.
  • Supervise formwork construction and stripping, reinforcing steel placement, and concrete placement and finishing for footings, piers, abutments, and decks.
  • Coordinate crane picks and rigging operations for girder setting, precast element placement, and material handling.
  • Verify structural layout, elevations, and tolerances in coordination with survey and project engineering staff.
  • Coordinate concrete pours, including scheduling, testing, and curing procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications for materials, mix designs, and structural tolerances.
  • Complete daily reports, quantity tracking, and quality control documentation.
  • Enforce jobsite safety procedures specific to structural work, including fall protection, crane/rigging safety, and confined space where applicable.
  • Train and mentor crew members on formwork, concrete, and structural construction methods.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in bridge or structural concrete construction, including at least 2 years in a lead or foreman role.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret structural plans and shop drawings.
  • Working knowledge of formwork systems, reinforcing steel placement, and cast-in-place concrete methods.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • OSHA 10-Hour certification (OSHA 30 preferred).
  • Working knowledge of fall protection and crane/rigging safety requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience on MDOT SHA or VDOT bridge replacement, rehabilitation, or maintenance projects.
  • Experience with prestressed/precast concrete girder erection.
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work at heights and on elevated structures with appropriate fall protection.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, including formwork materials and rebar.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and climb ladders and scaffolding for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasonal weather conditions, including over water or waterways where applicable.

Working Conditions

  • Active bridge construction jobsite environment with crane operations, elevated work, and heavy equipment.
  • Exposure to heights, noise, dust, and varying weather conditions.
  • May require work overactive roadways, waterways, or rail with associated protective measures.
  • May require early start times, extended hours, and occasional night or weekend work to meet project schedules.
  • Travel between project sites throughout the DMV region as assigned.
