Job summary

Chattanooga State Community College is seeking a part-time Food Service Worker on the Chattanooga State Campus to prepare and serve foods in a variety of service environments. Duties include stocking, cashiering where needed, and maintaining cleanliness and safety throughout shift.

Starting pay is $12.00 per hour with opportunities to perform cashier duties and support during daily operations under the direction of the Food Service Director.

Qualifications

Food Service Worker – Chattanooga State Campus

Part‑time temporary contract position: Monday – Friday 8:30‑2:15

Performs a wide range of duties involved with preparing and/or serving foods in one or more of a variety of food service environments. May prepare salad items, hot foods & cold foods, and/or assist in the preparation of bakery items as appropriate. Assists in cleaning work areas, equipment, utensils, and in the set‑up and service. May serve food to customers and/or perform cashiering duties as appropriate and other duties as assigned by the food service director.

Essential Functions
Holistic Student Support
  • The Food Service Worker prepares and stocks food for the needs of our community, adhering to safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Replenishes foods, silverware, plates, cutlery, dishes, trays, and condiments at serving stations.
  • Cleans, washes, and maintains work areas, including spot sweeping floors and cleaning facilities, pots, pans, service ware, utensils, and equipment.
Fiscal Stewardship
  • Assists in food cost profit/loss by minimizing waste and costs.
  • Conveys food and supplies from the main kitchen, bakery, and/or salad preparation area to the serving site using a cart or by carrying.
  • Performs cashiering duties as required.
  • Attends to day‑to‑day problems concerning equipment and food supplies; detects and disposes of spoiled or defective supplies with Food Service Director permission.
Organizational Culture
  • Maintains a fun, welcoming environment for all guests and co‑workers, promoting inclusivity regardless of race, gender, or sexuality.
  • May provide guidance and training to other employees when approved by the Director.
  • Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
Program Innovation
  • Sets up food service and kitchen areas, equipment, and utensils under detailed instruction, checking food temperatures and preparing areas for daily operations.
  • Follows prescribed procedures in setting up hot and cold food lines, grill and hot bar equipment, and front beverage/condiment line.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of hot and cold meat and vegetable dishes, hot bar items, stocking beverages, salads, sandwiches, simple bakery items, and other similar food items.
Teaching Excellence
  • Serves food items to customers from counters and/or steam tables, ensuring appropriate portions and garnishes as instructed.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • High School diploma or accredited GED and at least one year of experience directly related to the duties specified.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
  • Basic knowledge in cooking and preparing a variety of foods.
  • Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards.
