Job summary

The Bowery Mission in New York, NY is seeking a Cook to prepare and present well-prepared meals for diverse groups, maintain a clean and sanitized kitchen, and follow food handling best practices.

You will rotate stock, monitor temperatures, participate in trainings, and work a schedule with morning and potential afternoon shifts. Requires 1–2 years of experience, a high school diploma or GED, and a NY Food Handler Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days. Salary is $21.63 per hour.

Job description

The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization committed since the 1870s to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Bowery Mission meets essential needs and creates transformative community with men, women, children, and families in New York so that we can together overcome homelessness and poverty and flourish.

Cook and present well-prepared meals for varying groups of The Bowery Mission. Maintain food handling best practices. Interact well with a variety of backgrounds, demonstrating the importance of each person and “loving people through food.” Requires both consistency and flexibility to deliver reliable services in the midst of factors that change daily. Sites vary in volume served, population, and schedule with consistent tasks and operations. May serve at multiple sites, as needed.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Prepare meals in accordance with planned menus.
• Maintain a clean and sanitized work area.
• Wear proper attire, i.e. uniforms, aprons, smocks, gloves, hairnets/hats, etc.
• Monitor thermometers in freezer/refrigerator.
• Check and put away incoming stock in proper storage areas,
• Control inventory, i.e. maintain, keep track of, and rotate stock, and discard outdated and damaged stock.
• Participate in employee staff meetings and trainings.
• Duties include reaching, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Schedule:

A routing schedule with one weekend off per month. Will possibly be opening from 5:00am to 1:30pm, 11:00am to 7:30pm or 11:30am to 8:00pm.

Requirements:

• Embraces the organization's Statement of Faith.
• 1 - 2 years relevant experience in food service setting.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• (NY) Food Handler Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days.
• Strong Interpersonal and Customer Service skills.

Preferred:

• Knowledge in commercial cooking and lead cook responsibilities.
• Knowledge in food and workplace safety.
• Experience working with the homeless of New York City.
• Proficiency with computers and smartphones.

Salary:

$21.63 per hour
