Job summary

City Harvest is hiring a full-time cook for the Staten Island soup kitchen. The role oversees menu planning, budgeting, inventory, and ordering while maintaining NYDOH guidelines and food safety standards.

You will coordinate with nutrition and program staff, supervise volunteers, and ensure proper refrigeration, cleanliness, and readiness for events serving 25–200 people at a time.

Qualifications

  • Requires HS Diploma or GED with at least 3 years of cook experience.
  • Food Handlers Certificate required before hire (NYC DOHMH).
  • ServSafe Certification needed (City Harvest) and can be obtained after hire.
  • Experience cooking for 25–200 people for soup kitchen/events.
  • Knowledge of NYDOH nutritional guidelines and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Nutritionist, Program Director, and Program Coordinator on menu, budget, inventory and ordering.
  • Participate in bi-weekly menu preparation meetings.
  • Plan culturally diverse menus within NYDOH guidelines.
  • Incorporate fresh produce and introduce new menus.
  • Oversee organization and upkeep of kitchen space and equipment.
  • Coordinate with maintenance to meet NYDOH safety/cleanliness standards.
  • Oversee kitchen volunteer staff.
  • Monitor refrigeration temperatures 2x daily (Mon–Fri).
  • Maintain clean stations at all times.
  • Assist pantry with inventory and deliveries.

Job Location: 211 Canal Street - Staten Island, NY 10304, Position Type: Full Time, Salary Range: $25.00 - $25.00 Hourly, Job Shift: Day,

  • Coordinating with Nutritionist, Program Director, and Program Coordinator around menu preparation, budget, inventory and ordering.
  • Responsible to participate in bi-weekly menu preparation meetings.
  • Planning culturally diverse menus that are nutritionally beneficial and within NYDOH guidelines.
  • Incorporating fresh produce and introducing new menus regularly.
  • Responsible for the oversight of organization and upkeep of kitchen space and equipment.
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff in order to adhere to NYDOH regulations and guidelines around safety and cleanliness of the kitchen/soup kitchen space.
  • Facilitate oversight of kitchen volunteer staff.
  • Responsible to monitor and log refrigeration temperatures 2x daily, Monday through Friday.
  • Maintain clean stations at all times.
  • Supporting pantry team with related operations, including inventory support and deliveries.
Qualifications
  • Position requires HS Diploma, GED with at least 3 years’ cook experience working in the food services industry and/or with the homeless population.
  • Food Handlers Certificate is a required prior to hire: "Qualifying Certificate in Food Protection" (NYC DOHMH). ServSafe Certification (City Harvest) is needed and can be obtained after hire.
  • Experience with food preparation, ranging for up to 25-200 people at a time (for soup kitchen and holidays/special events).
  • Knowledge of NYDOH nutritional guidelines and regulations for food preparation.
  • Basic understanding of dietary needs of populations that are dealing with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and autoimmune deficiencies.
  • Hands-on experience with professional kitchen equipment.
  • Understanding of health and safety rules in a kitchen needed.
  • Must have exceptional communication skills both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups regarding complex and sensitive issues and regulations.
  • The physical ability to perform the essential job functions is needed.
  • In addition, the Cook shall perform any duties as required to meet the needs of the agency and the clients we serve.
