Washington State University Spokane is seeking a Food Service Worker to operate the campus café under supervision, performing food prep, service, and sanitation.

The role includes customer service, stock receipt, and cross-training to cover as PIC during supervisor absences. Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to operate commercial food service equipment and follow food safety procedures.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods while performing duties.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with students, faculty, staff, and customers.
  • Ability to provide work direction as PIC during supervisor absences.
  • Must have or obtain a valid driver’s license and meet driving standards.

Position Details

The Opportunity: Washington State University Spokane is now accepting applications for a Food Service Worker. As a Food Service Worker, under general supervision, you will perform a variety of food service duties in the operation of the campus café. You will prepare and serve food and beverages, provide customer service, maintain food safety and sanitation standards, receive and stock supplies, and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. You will also be cross‑trained to provide operational support and serve as the designated Person in Charge (PIC) during supervisor absences.

Additional Information: This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible. This position has work location in Spokane, WA. Monthly Salary: $3,253.00 to $4,300.00 | Range 35 | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications
  • Possession of, or eligible for at time of hire, a food handler’s permit; OR equivalent education/experience.
  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • One (1) year of experience in food service, food preparation, customer service, or a closely related environment; or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain ServSafe Food Handler Certification
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service while working in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial food service equipment and follow established food safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods while performing food service duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and customers.
  • Ability to provide work direction and coordinate café operations when serving as the designated Person in Charge (PIC) during supervisor absences.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of progressively responsible food service experience.
  • Experience preparing espresso beverages and operating commercial coffee equipment.
  • Experience using a point‑of‑sale (POS) system and handling cash transactions.
  • Experience receiving inventory, stocking supplies, and assisting with ordering.
  • Experience working in a café, coffee shop, snack bar, or similar food service operation.
  • Experience providing work direction or serving as a designated lead or Person in Charge.
  • Person in Charge (PIC) certification
