Job summary

Salem School District is seeking a Food Service Worker/Cashier to support the nutrition program in school buildings. You will assist in meal preparation, serve meals with a focus on efficiency and warmth, and help achieve USDA standards under the Site Lead and Director of School Nutrition. Training for Serv Safe and POS use will be provided as needed.

The role is part-time, with a school-year schedule and starting hourly pay of 16.85 USD, depending on experience.

Qualifications

• Experience in food service, including quantity cooking preferred.
• Must be physically capable; stand, walk, bend for long periods.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
• Familiarity with food service products and safety practices.
• Ability to learn and work with POS software; Serv Safe certification within 90 days.

Responsibilities

Job description

TITLE: Food Service Worker/Cashier

REPORTS TO: Director of School Nutrition and Site Coordinator. Specific job tasks assigned by Site Lead in assigned building.

JOB SUMMARY: To serve the students attractive and nutritious meals in an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness and warmth and support the Site Lead in achieving the program's standards and goals.

Requirements

• Experience in Food Service including quantity and batch cooking preferred.
• Must be physically capable of performing duties that include the ability to walk, bend, and stand for long periods of time.
• Lift and carry objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds.
• The ability to work with a variety of food service and cleaning related products.
• Ability to learn and work with Point-of-Sale software.
• Serv Safe Food Handler Certification required within 90 days of hire. Training and Certification course will be provided as needed.

Performance Responsibilities

The Worker/Cashier is responsible for completing preparation, service and cleaning tasks as assigned by the Site Lead, and assisting the Site Lead in achieving the standards and goals set forth by the USDA, Director of School Nutrition, Superintendent's Office, and School Board. Responsibilities include:

• Provide Customer Service in an efficient and pleasant manner.
• Assist in preparing foods according to standardized recipes as assigned by the Site Lead.
• Follow Site Lead's guidance for replenishing food, condiments, etc. during service periods.
• Follow NSLP and SBP meal component and portion guidelines.
• Assist with cleaning and sanitizing of kitchen area, dish room area, cafeteria, and all equipment to the standards provided by the Director. Perform major cleaning of refrigerator and storage rooms at intervals scheduled by the Director of School Nutrition, Site Coordinator and/or Site Lead.
• Proficiency in use and safe operation and cleaning of all kitchen equipment.
• Enter meal counts and student deposits into the Point-of-Sale system and related documentation as assigned by the Site Lead.
• May be expected to perform other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: School Year

2026-2027 HOURLY SALARY: Starting at $16.85 or more depending on experience

EVALUATION: The Director of School Nutrition will evaluate performance no less than annually.
