Job Description

Description

Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) under the Department of Mental Health is seeking a Food Service Supervisor I who will oversee the daily operation of the hospital's Food & Nutrition services. These duties will include supervising up to five cooks and ten food service workers. This position will be responsible for kitchen sanitation and tray line operations.

Please Note : This is a full-time, 40-hour position. The shift is 11:30 AM - 8:00 PM with Sunday and Monday as regular scheduled days off.

Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Supervises daily production and service of meals, by overseeing tray line activities, to ensure meals are served on time, are well received, and are served at appropriate temperatures.
  • Coordinates production and tray line activities, by collaborating with Cook III, to ensure efficient day to day operations.
  • Monitors supplies, by overseeing daily receiving, storage and issuance of food and nonfood items, maintaining usage logs, and conducting monthly physical counts, to control inventory and have adequate amounts on hand.
  • Participates in menu planning, by suggesting menu and recipe revisions, to ensure well-accepted meals.
  • Oversees sanitation and maintenance of equipment and food service areas, by inspecting logs, assigning cleaning duties, preparing repair slips, and completing weekly inspection forms, to meet external agency and department standards.
  • Assigns work, by completing daily assignment sheets, to ensure all tasks are done.
  • Makes recommendations, including supplies and equipment needs and protocol revisions, to ensure efficient services.
  • Provides orientation for new employees, by reviewing proper procedures and working 1:1, to ensure proper training of staff.
  • Provides OJT and trainings, by assessing staff competency and demonstrating procedures, to teach skills, ensure compliance with safety, sanitation and food preparation requirements.
  • Keeps staff informed, by conducting ongoing meetings, to encourage open lines of communication.
  • Maintains staffing levels, by participating in interview committees, to ensure sufficient staffing to perform daily department activities.
  • Conducts performance evaluations of employees, by recommending commendations or disciplinary action and completing EPRS, to ensure staff competency.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ServSafe Certification or equivalent food safety credential.
  • Experience in a healthcare, mental health, or institutional setting with knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition standards.
  • Knowledge of inventory management systems and food ordering software.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven experience supervising diverse teams in a fast-paced food service environment.
  • Knowledge of DPH, Joint Commission, or other regulatory compliance standards related to food service and sanitation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train, coach, and motivate staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, delegate effectively, and maintain high quality standards.
  • Ability to analyze operational data and contribute to continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with food service protocols in state or government agencies, including reporting and recordkeeping procedures.


Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) Statement:

Located on over 100 acres in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) is part of an integrated network of effective, efficient and culturally competent mental health services. It provides intermediate and long-term inpatient care for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who live in Massachusetts, as well as individuals requiring specialized court ordered evaluations.

WRCH provides inpatient services to 290 adults, inclusive of a Deaf Inpatient Mental Health Service, and 30 adolescents on the ACCU.

The Department of Mental Health assures and provides access to services and supports to meet the mental health needs of individuals of all ages, enabling them to live, work and participate in their communities. The Department establishes standards to ensure effective and culturally competent care to promote recovery. The Department sets policy, promotes self-determination, protects human rights and supports mental health training and research.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the preparation and cooking of food in a hotel, restaurant, cafeteria, catering firm, government or private institution and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate's degree with a major in restaurant and hotel management, food service management, home economics, nutrition or dietetics may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*

II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in restaurant and hotel management, food service management, home economics, nutrition or dietetics may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*

III. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at the high school level or higher, with a major in culinary arts, food services or food trades may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
