Job Description

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for a Food Service Supervisor position at the Wildwood Correctional Center (WCC) located in Kenai, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

  1. Play a vital role in budgetary planning, safe food production, and the training development and supervision of your kitchen team.
  2. Ensure policies and procedures are adhered to in relation to sanitation, safety, food handling, and security precautions in all food preparation and service areas.
  3. Be responsible for monitoring, ordering, and warehouse inventory of all food to meet the daily meal needs for 471 inmates and facility staff.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Wildwood Correctional Complex houses inmates of all custody levels, including a Pretrial Facility (115 inmates), a Sentenced Facility (264 inmates), and a Transitional Program (92 inmates). This position is based in the Administration offices of Building 10, with limited exposure to inmates, overseeing the main kitchen.

Who We Are Looking For:

We seek candidates with competencies such as:

  • Supervision: Planning, assigning, monitoring work; evaluating performance; staff development; authority to hire, transfer, promote, discipline, or dismiss staff.
  • Food Service: Knowledge of preparing and serving food.
  • Food Production: Planning, growing, harvesting food using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Flexibility: Adaptability to change and new information.
  • Listening: Effective communication and interpretation of verbal and non-verbal cues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A certificate from an accredited college, technical, or vocational school in culinary arts, food science, nutrition, dietetics, or related field.
  • One year of lead-level experience in food preparation within a custodial/residential institution, such as service as a Food Service Lead with the State of Alaska or equivalent.

Substitution: One year of relevant food service experience including nutrition, menu planning, staff scheduling, safety, handling, purchasing, and inventory management can substitute for the certification.

Special Note: Positions require working with the resident population of correctional or healthcare facilities, adhering to relevant statutes, policies, and procedures. Duties may include sole supervision and security of inmates/residents.

Additional Required Documents:

  • Certifications related to the field
  • Two recent evaluations

Special Notices:

  • Daily contact with staff and inmates
  • Awareness of surroundings in a prison environment

Starting Salary: Up to $2,709.60 (Step D), depending on criteria.

Legal Employment: Applicants must certify legal right to work in the U.S. and maintain appropriate documentation. The State does not sponsor employment.

Education: Complete the Education section of the application; transcripts may be required to verify credentials.

Foreign Education: Must demonstrate equivalency to U.S. standards through recognized evaluation services.

Work Experience: Document all relevant employment, including employer details, job titles, and dates. Incomplete applications may be disqualified.
