Job summary

  • Operate equipment used in menu preparation; follow recipes.
  • Perform catering duties including set‑up, service, and clean‑up; interact with customers.
  • Maintain knowledge of portion sizes/ingredients; adhere to uniform policy.
  • Participate in training to adapt to operation changes.
  • Responsible for garbage removal and cardboard recycling.
  • Conduct inventories daily/weekly/monthly as assigned by supervisor.
  • Exercising functional supervision over student staff.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives and apply safety practices.
  • Apply safety-related knowledge in daily work.

Sub Department: Wadsworth Hall Food Service

Michigan Technological University is seeking a 9‑month, 40‑hour per week Food Service Helper for its Residential Dining department in Wadsworth Hall. The role includes food preparation, production, customer service, equipment operation, and cashier duties.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties
  • Direct activities of student food service workers in the assigned area.
  • Assist in training and instruction of regular student employees, maintaining records and preparing required reports.
  • Order food, maintain inventory, operate electronic cash register and card readers; submit money to accounting.
  • Responsible for cleaning, sanitation, and safety in the assigned area.
  • Operate all equipment used in preparation and production of menu items, following safety procedures; understand and interpret recipes.
  • Perform catering duties including set‑up, serving, delivering, cleaning, table service, and all aspects of clean‑up; interact with customers courteously.
  • Maintain knowledge of portion size, food items, and ingredients; adhere to current uniform policy.
  • Participate in any training necessary to accommodate changes in operation affecting regular duties.
  • Responsible for garbage removal and cardboard recycling in assigned areas.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, or monthly physical inventories in designated areas as assigned by supervisor.
  • Exercising functional supervision over student assistants and other support staff.
  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work; actively engage in university continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Apply safety‑related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures
  • High school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience
  • Experience working in a food service operation, including food production in a commercial, institutional, restaurant, hotel kitchen, or similar setting.
  • Experience serving customers.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
  • SERV Safe Certified.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to learn and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with people in varying situations and all areas assigned.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and on short notice.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The work environment is moderate to very loud. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to wet, humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, extreme heat and cold.

Offers of employment are contingent upon a completed background check.

Compensation and Schedule

Hourly rate: $16.39 (minimum). 1st shift hours start between 5 am and before noon. 9‑month appointment.
