Job Title: Food Service Cook (Make a Difference!)

Job Type: Full Time

Shift: 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; must work every other weekend; flexible scheduling

Wage: $19.25 - $22.00 per hour

Location: On-site in Saint Paul, MN. Reliable commuting or relocation required. Located on the bus line.

Physical Setting: Emergency shelter/transitional housing environment.

Job Description

We seek an experienced Cook to prepare delicious meals for our guests and residents. Responsibilities include cooking, preparing hot and cold foods, beverages, cleaning, and operating kitchen equipment. The role serves up to 300 guests per meal and involves maintaining a safe, welcoming environment.

Responsibilities

• Follow established food service processes aligned with UGMTC’s mission and values.
• Prepare and serve a variety of foods including meats, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, bakery items, and beverages.
• Adjust menus based on donations and perishable items.
• Follow safety and food handling standards.
• Transport food and supplies within the kitchen and service areas.
• Maintain cleanliness of work areas, utensils, and equipment.
• Assist with food safety, sanitation, and equipment maintenance.
• Create a welcoming environment for residents, staff, and volunteers.
• Collaborate with volunteers and staff to ensure quality service.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; Culinary Arts degree preferred.
• At least 1 year of cooking experience in a large residential or institutional setting.
• SERV Safe or equivalent certification preferred.
• Valid MN driver’s license with a good record preferred.
• Flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Experience or interest in serving vulnerable populations.

• Knowledge of food safety, preparation, and presentation standards.
• Good judgment, professionalism, and boundary setting.
• Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
• Understanding of issues affecting homeless and underserved communities.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Team-oriented and customer service skills.
• Ability to read, write, and follow routine instructions.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work in a commercial kitchen environment with temperature extremes.
• Lift up to 20 pounds regularly; occasionally over 30 pounds.
• Stand for long periods, perform repetitive movements, and other physical activities.
• Follow safety precautions to mitigate physical risks.
