Summary:
The Food Service Associate is trained to work in a number of positions in the Dietary Department. This position may be scheduled in patient service areas, diet office/host/hostess, or retail/customer service areas.
Responsibilities:
- Performs and completes the daily duties and responsibilities in the patient services area including:
- takes temperatures in accordance with HACCP guidelines,
- serves food from a steam table,
- breaks down and cleans station at the end of meal service,
- properly portions food items in accordance with diet orders and items listed on menu ticket,
- examines filled trays for completeness, accuracy, and places trays into cart,
- passes trays and interacts with patients,
- may be required to assist in cutting foods or opening containers as requested,
- washes dishes and operates commercial dish machine,
- cleans and sanitizes work areas,
- fills supply requisition orders according to policy and records delivered items accurately.
- Performs and completes the daily duties and responsibilities of the host/hostess including:
- prepares dietary information to be used by kitchen personnel in preparation of foods for hospital patients,
- processes new diets and changes as required,
- participates in tray line and food temperature monitoring as assigned,
- examines filled trays for completeness, accuracy, and placing trays into cart,
- passes trays and interacts with patients,
- provides assistance with menu selection to patients,
- may be required to assist in cutting foods or opening containers as requested,
- calculates diabetic diets and performs calorie counts,
- communicates patient needs to appropriate staff (teammates) while maintaining patient confidentiality,
- may prepare and deliver special nourishments to unit nourishment rooms. Maintains and restocks nourishment rooms,
- uses basic knowledge of therapeutic diets.
- Performs and completes the daily duties and responsibilities in the retail/café area including:
- operates cash register, receives payments from customers or teammates, makes change, and issues receipts.
- maintains proper security of cash at all time, understands and follows proper cash handling procedures in accordance with departmental policy,
- prepares for service before meal time and cleans up cafeteria and dining room after,
- sets up and stocks beverage area, grab and go coolers, and condiment stations,
- records temperatures in accordance with HACCP standards and serves food from tray line,
- cooks breakfast items on grill top, interacts with customers, and cleans and sanitizes all work areas.
- Uses computers and tablets daily.
- Attends allergy, foodborne illness, and safety in-service training.
- Attends scheduled staff meetings.
- Follows ServSafe sanitary handling procedures with food preparation, food service, and equipment operation.
- Responsible for daily, routine, and weekend cleaning in the department.
- Complies with all departmental policies.
- Is available to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and some holidays.
Other information:
Education:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required, any higher education from an accredited college will supersede this requirement.
Licensure/Certification:
• None.
Experience:
• 6+ months of food service or customer service experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have basic knowledge of therapeutic diets.
- Must have basic knowledge of food service and sanitary procedures.
- Must be able to cope with a moderate degree of stress.
- Is flexible in work assignments, including working in a variety of areas in one shift.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships and communication levels with co-workers, supervisors, administration, and general public. Demonstrates good customer service skills in all interactions.
- Must be able to manage time.
- Maintains a positive attitude.
- Is able to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
- Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
- Is able to meet the physical requirements of the job, which include working for several hours in a standing position, significant walking, and dealing with slippery floors, hot pans, liquids and foods.
Valid NC Driver’s License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
