Job Description

Job Title: Food Service Assistant Cook Pay Grade: Classified Category 4

FLSA Status: Non-exempt Typical Work Year: 174 Days

SUMMARY : This position involves preparing and serving school meals, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and ensuring compliance with food safety standards. Key duties include preparing breakfast and lunch items, setting up and cleaning the salad bar, washing dishes, sanitizing work areas, and staging meals for the next day. Candidates should demonstrate strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as professionalism and reliability. Work takes place primarily in a school kitchen setting, with physical activity such as standing, walking, and lifting throughout the day.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Prepare breakfast and pack breakfast bags for delivery to classrooms;
  • Unpack breakfast bags and record what was returned for morning paperwork;
  • Prepare and setup of salad bar for lunch service: cut vegetables and fruit;
  • Serve the hot side of lunch;
  • Ensure all ovens and hot table are turned off at the end of service;
  • Wash all dishes including, but not limited to, breakfast, lunch, and end of day dishes;
  • Wipe down all counters and steam tables;
  • Wash and sanitize all sinks out at the end of day;
  • Sweep and mop kitchen floors;
  • Staging breakfast meal for the next day;
  • Periodic cleaning and sanitation tasks; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent, plus training in food service preparation and health codes. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job duties and responsibilities of the position.

EXPERIENCE: 1-3 years of experience working in a professional kitchen is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: None required.

TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of health codes and CDE codes; 6 hours of training is required by the CDE every year
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and discretion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Position with standard office hours (may include occasional evenings or weekends for special events).
  • Work is primarily performed in a school office setting, with frequent interaction with students, parents, and staff.
  • This position requires standing, sitting, or walking for extended periods and occasional lifting of potential light to heavy objects.
