Kellogg Center in East Lansing is seeking a Student Food Service Assistant to support the preparation, cooking, and serving of food for Kellogg events while maintaining high standards of customer service.

As a Michigan State University student, you will work 15–20 hours per week, including early mornings, nights, and weekends. The role involves teamwork, food safety compliance, and assisting with various kitchen tasks as schedule demands.

Responsibilities

• Assist full-time staff with preparation, cooking, and serving of food for Kellogg events.

• Ensure food safety regulations and guidelines are followed for safe handling and serving of meals.
• Provide outstanding customer service to guests of Culinary Services.
• Coordinate with supervisors to identify tasks each shift.
• Perform kitchen cleanup after meals and support other duties as assigned.

Location: Kellogg Center

Pay rate: $14/hr.

Due to the minimum wage increase at MSU , the starting rate for this position will raise to $15/hr. effective 8/9/26. Those hired prior to 8/9/26 will be brought to the new minimum.

As a Student Food Service Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting full-time staff members with the preparation, cooking, and serving of food for the Kellogg events, helping with preparing appetizers, entrees, starches, vegetables, and other items. You must also be knowledgeable of all relevant food safety regulations, standards, and guidelines to ensure the safe handling and serving of all meals to customers. It is your job to make sure the guests of Culinary Services receive the most outstanding customer service.

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

• Cooking, preparing, and serving food at the Kellogg Center
• Kitchen clean up after meals are served
• Communicate with supervisors, managers and other student team members
• Coordinate with supervisors job tasks that need to be completed each shift
• Other duties as assigned. This position does not have a set schedule and times may vary depending on the needs of the company.

Preferred Qualifications

• Serve Safe or other food safety certification
• Experience cooking or working in a high-volume food service operation.

Work Hours

• Must be able to work varied shifts, including early mornings (possible start 6:00AM), nights (until 10 PM), and weekends
• During the school year domestic student employees may not work more than 29 hours per work week, and international student employees may not work more than 20 hours per work week
• During school breaks, between semesters, and during summer semester, all student employees are permitted to work up to 40 hours per work week.
