Position Summary

Plan, cook, and prepare foods for service to all customers, including patients and cafeteria patrons. Assemble patient trays accurately, deliver them to departments, and maintain a clean kitchen while following HAACP procedures. Perform dish room tasks, sweep and mop floors, check in stock, and provide high-quality customer service to ensure patient satisfaction.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • The Food Service Associate II may be assigned any of the following: Host/Hostess, Tray line, Porter, Pots and Pans/Dish Room.
  • Know policies and procedures for HACCP standards and document information on HACCP logs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe food handling and proper temperature ranges.
  • Provide positive customer service to all customers.
  • Interact with fellow workers in a harmonious and cooperative environment.
  • Profess compliance with hospital policies: attendance, mandatory education, safety, infection control, etc.
  • Reflect the company’s values and the Code of Conduct ethics and compliance program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Host/Hostess Responsibilities:
  • Maintain storage areas, refrigerators, and freezers clean, neat, and organized.
  • Label, date, and rotate food (FIFO, Julian dates).
  • Arrive well-groomed, wear ID badge, and follow the departmental dress code.
  • Follow proper procedures for delivering tube feedings, assembling, recording, and delivering nourishments.
  • Deliver late meals to nurse supervisors or designated refrigerators.
  • Handle patient meal tickets properly (highlight priorities, diabetics).
  • Read, interpret, and follow patient meal orders.
  • Store foods at proper temperatures before, during, and after meals.
  • Keep work area clean and uncluttered and ensure all equipment is sanitized.
  • Record HACCP temperatures continuously.
  • Handle special meal tickets such as “ready at times”, “ADA’s”, priorities, and guest trays.
  • Deliver isolation trays following nursing checks.
  • Tray line Responsibilities:
  • Review production sheets for salads, desserts, sandwiches, and bar items.
  • Follow standardized recipes for production.
  • Check temperatures of items as needed.
  • Prepare and portion desserts, salads, and sandwiches, including modified diets.
  • Prepare items for café bars, fruit bars, and specialty bar.
  • Prepare sandwiches and items for late trays.
  • Use recommended garnishes for products.
  • Follow City of Austin, Texas Department of Health, and JCAHO standards for food production and sanitation.
  • Maintain proper cleaning and sanitation guidelines.
  • Plan preparation schedule to ensure food is ready for service at specific times.
  • Assist with tray line and café line as needed.
  • Maintain a clean work area during and at the end of the shift.
  • Use sanitizer, clean cloths, and rinse frequently.
  • Document quality control data and temperature logs for all equipment.
  • Remove trash as directed and maintain a clean environment.
  • Assist with other tasks within your skills and training.
  • Assist with employee training as needed.
  • Carry out tasks efficiently and accurately.
  • Stock items in a timely manner and rotate per dates.
  • Follow delivery schedules and remove trays from floors per policy.
  • Check utility rooms, prepare snacks, and clean carts as per department policy.
  • Report maintenance needs and drain as required.
  • Adhere to cross‑contamination policy and support dish cleaning procedures.
Porter Responsibilities
  • Follow City of Austin, Texas Department of Health, and JCAHO standards for food storage.
  • Check in stock and put away in appropriate places.
  • Perform cleaning tasks per department policy.
  • Wash pots, pans, kitchen utensils, and small wares in accordance with health codes.
  • Document sanitizing solution per policy.
  • Change water in sinks after each meal or as needed.
  • Clean pot room, sinks, counters, shelves, and walls.
  • Maintain a clean, organized area per health codes.
  • Sweep and mop floors, clean walls, coolers, and freezers.
  • Sanitize drains weekly following proper procedure.
  • Disposal of trash and waste; replace liners.
  • Bus tables in the Atrium during peak periods.
  • Store all cleaning tools and chemicals per policy.
  • Reflect company values and the Code of Conduct ethics and compliance program.
  • Demonstrate SDH Service Excellence standards in every interaction.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must understand national patient safety initiatives and strictly comply with all safety protocols required by HCA and St. David’s Surgical Hospital. Must read, write, and follow written or oral instructions. Preferred: prior porter or utility knowledge.

Education and Experience

Preferred: Experience in retail or hospital food service, formal training in food service production or culinary arts. High School Diploma or GED equivalent (not required).

Licenses and Certificates

Required: Current ServSafe Food Handler Permit, Travis County Health Department Food Handler Card, or State Food Safety permit within seven days of hire.
