Job summary

Roche seeks a Research Engineer II to advance chemistry and process development for instrument prototypes in next-generation sequencing systems. You will contribute to orthogonal assays, data collection, and analysis within a collaborative team in Santa Clara, CA.

You will apply molecular biology expertise, develop assays for fluorescence methods, and optimize formulations for sequencing workflows in a rigorous R&D setting.

Qualifications

• You have a degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or closely related discipline.
• 1–5 years of research/early development experience in life sciences.
• Core technical experience with molecular biology workflows including DNA and proteins.
• Experience developing assays for fluorescence microscopy and qubit or other fluorescence spectrometers.
• Experience with common molecular biology tools and processes such as PCR and gel electrophoresis.
• Solid understanding of chemistry and physics fundamentals; meticulous mindset.
• Positive, proactive attitude with a passion for science and learning.

Responsibilities

• Develop orthogonal assays to measure system performance.
• Operate various instruments and develop processes for breadboards and prototypes.
• Test, characterize and optimize chemical formulations for DNA sequencing workflows.
• Collect data, document observations, and help analyze and present results.
• Use analytical instrumentation to characterize chemicals, mixtures, and surfaces on prototype instruments.
• Generate experimental plans and reports; communicate results to a broader audience.
• Collaborate with other scientists and engineers.
