Job summary

Zekelman Industries is seeking a Floater Operator in Illinois. You will safely operate the seam welder, mill, and scarfing unit, perform changeovers, and collaborate with the production team to meet quality and output goals.

The role requires a strong mechanical aptitude, teamwork, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with strict safety standards.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of manufacturing experience.
• Trade certification preferred.
• Crane certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Operate seam welder, mill, and scarfing unit.
• Perform changeovers and assist in setup.
• Coordinate with supervision and mill crew on safety and quality.
• Calibrate micrometers at shift start and during changeovers.
• Maintain housekeeping and report production updates.

This position is responsible for running the seam welder, mill, and scarfing unit, performing changeovers, and collaborating with the production team to meet quality and output goals. This role is ideal for individuals with strong mechanical aptitude who value teamwork and thrive in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.What You’ll DoPerform work in accordance with company safety policies and report unsafe conditions immediatelyTroubleshoot and resolve production issues while communicating effectively with the mill crewFollow and communicate the mill schedule to ensure adherence to production timelinesInterface with supervision, mill crew, and other departments to support safe and efficient operationsCommunicate quality requirements and ensure product standards are consistently metRelay daily production updates to supervision and other shiftsMaintain offline requirements to support quick-change operationsCoordinate with maintenance teams to support repairs and equipment adjustmentsCalibrate micrometers at the start of each shift and during changeoversPerform size, gauge, grade, and shape changes online as requiredDirect and assist in changeovers while inspecting tooling condition after each rollingSupport other team positions and assist in cross-training team membersMaintain housekeeping standards across all work areasPerform preventive maintenance activities as assignedMaintain regular, full-time, predictable onsite attendanceWho You Are5+ years of manufacturing experience, preferredTrade certification, preferredStrong mechanical aptitude with basic math skillsExperience using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers, preferredCrane certification requiredStrong communication and interpersonal skillsCommitment to promoting safe work practices in accordance with regulatory and company policiesPhysical AbilitiesStand, walk, use hands, and reach with arms throughout the shiftLift, climb, bend, stoop, push, and pull as requiredLift up to 50 poundsWork in environments with moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, and elevated noise levelsWork in occasional wet or humid conditions within an industrial settingWhat You’ll GetZekelman Industries offers competitive compensation and excellent benefits, including low-cost, high-quality medical and dental coverage.
