Overview

Horizons’ Early Education Center provides full time early care and education services for children experiencing homelessness and support services for parents, in an atmosphere of safety, nurturance, and stability. A Teacher is responsible for the constant supervision of children in their classroom. Our teachers review important decisions with their Lead Teachers and their Education Managers, as appropriate. Teachers support and follow all Early Education Center and Horizons for Homeless Children policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Curriculum

  1. Display knowledge of early childhood development.
  2. Contribute to the design and implementation of a dynamic, creative, age-appropriate and multi-cultural curriculum.
  3. Practice positive behavior management techniques in guiding the children’s behavior.
  4. Inform parents of classroom curriculum plans (e.g., posting lesson plans).

Professional Development

  1. Maintaining an accurate and up to date PQ registry.
  2. Maintaining the required 20 hours of professional Development annually.

Communication

  1. Communicate with children in a positive way that demonstrates genuine interest and respect and exhibits sensitivity to children as individuals.
  2. Communicate positively with parents daily to inform them of their child’s ongoing development and activities.
  3. Assist in the design and implementation of other classroom parent communication systems (i.e. bulletin boards, monthly newsletters, etc.).
  4. Complete children’s progress reports and participate in parent conferences.
  5. Assist in plans for and attending Parent-Teacher functions.
  6. Communicate openly and effectively with classroom team including participating in weekly team meetings.
  7. Work closely with Family Advocates to promote healthy family relationships.

Classroom Management

  1. Maintain appropriate standards of health and safety in accordance with state regulations and Horizons for Homeless Children policies and procedures.
  2. Understand and implement emergency procedures.
  3. Organize classroom schedule to allow for child-initiated and teacher-directed activities and individual and small group learning.
  4. Coordinate transitions of children to and from classrooms.
  5. Ensure that classroom equipment is in good repair and inform Lead Teacher when supplies are low.
  6. Submit all records and reports promptly and accurately, including attendance sheets, accident reports, progress reports and time sheets.

Where and when you’ll work

This is a 40-hour, full time position that’s exempt from overtime. You can expect to work Monday through Friday on-site between two consistent classrooms. There will be monthly trainings and/or evening events with advanced planning and notice. Our space is located: Edgerley Family Horizons Center at 1785 Columbus Ave, Roxbury, MA

Starting salary range, compensation, and benefits

$54,200 – $57,600 is the starting salary range for our entry-level roles. Your starting salary will fall within that range depending on your competencies, experience, and skillset.

Your total compensation package includes the following benefits:

  1. Health coverage options designed to be as comprehensive and affordable for you as possible, with Horizons covering between 70-75% of premiums (a value that ranges from an additional $8,000 – 20,000 per year based on your enrollment choices).
  2. While you have a choice between an HMO and PPO plan for medical coverage, most employees pay $86 for individual, $172 for 2-person, or $270 for family coverage per bi-weekly paycheck and never pay more than $300 for individual or $600 for 2-person/family toward deductibles.
  3. Paid leave coverage is offered through Massachusetts’ Paid Family and Medical Leave. Horizons covers both medical and family contributions at 60% (100% for employees who earn less than $50,000 annually) with up to 26 weeks of paid leave available based on eligibility and approval.
  4. Horizons additionally offers 1 week for paid parental leave for welcoming a child into your family through birth, foster, or adoption, that often covers the waiting period for PFML to begin.

Qualifications

Requirements

Education & Experience

  1. Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) Teacher Certification required.
  2. At least 9 months to 1 year or more of relevant work experience in Early Education.
  3. 12 ECE Credits minimum preferred for Early Head Start and Head Start classrooms.
  4. Associates and or bachelor's degree in early childhood education (ECE) or related field strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  2. Ability to collaborate and solve problems using a team approach.
  3. Ability and willingness to handle all sensitive information confidentially.
  4. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  5. Priority will be given to individuals who have had previous experience working with children and families experiencing homelessness or trauma, multi-ethnic urban families or with children at risk.
  6. Basic computer skills and knowledge to effectively use MS Office applications and other relevant ECE software applications.
