Job summary

MercyOne in Ankeny, IA is seeking a Full-time Medical Assistant to support clinical teams in delivering compassionate patient care. You will greet patients, record vitals, prepare them for the provider, and assist with procedures, tests, and specimen collection.

The role requires CMA/RMA credentials, a high school diploma, BLS, and a valid driver's license for travel between MercyOne sites. Experience is preferred but not required; training and ongoing education are provided.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Current CMA or RMA certification required.
• Medication Aide certification/course required if applicable.
• BLS certification within hire timeline (3 months).
• Mandatory Reporter abuse training completed within 3 months.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to multiple MercyOne sites.

Responsibilities

• Perform general patient care following established standards.
• Greet and prepare patients for the health care provider.
• Record vital signs: BP, temp, pulse, respiration, height, weight, allergies, medications.
• Draw blood samples and prepare specimens for lab analysis.
• Administer medications and vaccines via multiple routes.
• May perform routine tests including EKGs.
• Schedule diagnostic testing and follow up for completion.
• Communicate test results and care plan to patients.
• Prepare, clean and sterilize instruments; maintain clean rooms.
• Document patient plans and results in medical records.
• Escalate non-routine issues to the practice manager or providers.
• Ensure safety checklists and quality controls are completed.
• Protect patient privacy.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements / Qualifications:

a. Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Current/valid Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification required or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required if applicable.
• Successfully completed Medication Aide 40-hour course or current/valid Medication Aide certification by state agency required if applicable.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
• Valid Driver’s/Chauffeurs License required, must meet MercyOne’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, must be at least 18 years of age and be eligible to drive per Iowa state law. Must possess reliable form of transportation to and from multiple worksites in the MercyOne Medical Group

b. Experience (required and preferred):

• 2 years Medical Assistant experience preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform general patient care by following established standards and procedures.
• Greet and prepare patients for the health care provider.
• Obtain and record vital signs including but not limited to, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, and current medications and presenting problem.
• May be required to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Administer ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topically, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.
• May perform routine tests including but not limited to EKG’s.
• Schedule patients for diagnostic testing and follows up to ensure completion of testing.
• Communicate with patient regarding test results and plan of care by phone or mail as directed by physician.
• Prepare, clean and sterilize instruments and maintain equipment; keep patient exam rooms stocked, clean and orderly; dispose of contaminated items according to protocol.
• Document patient plan(s) of care, tests and examination results in the medical record as directed by the provider.
• Escalate non-routine issues, questions and/or concerns to the practice manager or healthcare provider(s).
• Ensure safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
• Provide for patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights.
• Perform other duties as assigned by practice manager, MA Lead or as requested by healthcare provider(s).
