Role Summary

Flight Program and Critical Care Operations Manager – This role provides day‑to‑day leadership for Carilion Clinic Patient Transport Department’s critical care transport arm, overseeing flight bases in Christiansburg, Hardy, and Lexington, Virginia, and managing the neonatal‑pediatric transport team based out of Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee day‑to‑day operations of the department, ensuring alignment with goals and objectives.
  • Organize, manage, and control departmental functions and resources in a collaborative and participative manner for optimal performance.
  • Coordinate resources to provide adequate staffing for the department.
  • Demonstrate effective team‑building and leadership skills and establish day‑to‑day priorities while directing staff task assignments.
  • Facilitate teams in problem‑solving processes and monitor and evaluate customer satisfaction with services.
  • Collaboratively develop and implement programs to continuously enhance customer satisfaction within the service in conjunction with senior service line management.
  • Facilitate professional growth and development, including providing in‑service programming and an effective performance appraisal process.
  • Implement department budget and monitor expenditures.
  • Support service line mission, goals and scorecard objectives.
  • Create a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with standards and respectful of patient rights.
  • Monitor and evaluate quality, appropriateness and safety of care provided by the department.
  • Communicate appropriate information to stakeholders in an ongoing, timely and accurate fashion.
  • Establish forums for staff to engage in open and proactive two‑way communication.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required (four years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree).
  • Experience: Minimum of three years of clinical experience in emergency medical services and two years of supervisory experience in emergency medical services. Preferred experience in Air Medevac, Dispatch, Ground EMS, Pediatric‑Neonatal transport care, Critical Care Nursing, or Transfer Center.
  • Licensure, Certification, and Registration: Nationally registered and Virginia State Intermediate or Paramedic certification required, or Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Virginia required.
  • Critical Care Certifications: Must hold AHA HCP‑BLS, EVOC, and ACLS; obtain PALS, NRP, TNCC or ATLS (audit) within one year of hire; obtain FP‑C or CFRN within two years of hire. Must complete transport specialist orientation, maintain proficiency in clinical skills per the competency validation tool, and serve in that specific role minimum of two shifts per month.
  • Leadership and Interpersonal Skills: Effective team‑building and leadership skills; excellent problem‑solving, communication, priority setting, and work competency skills.
  • Other Minimum Qualifications: Ability to maintain a driving record in accordance with the CCPT Driver Safety Policy; ability to work within 60 miles of the Roanoke CCPT location.
  • Staff must be able to wear an N95 respirator and meet aircraft weight and balance restrictions (<240 lbs mission weight, <225 lbs without flight gear).
