Job summary

Tolono Public Library District is seeking a Substitute Clerk to serve as the first point of contact for patrons and to perform a variety of circulation and clerical tasks. You will assist patrons with library services and technology, register new patrons, and help maintain an orderly, welcoming environment.

This role requires strong communication skills, reliability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Flexible scheduling is available to cover shifts as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Familiarity with computers, email, Internet, etc.
• Ability to troubleshoot basic technology issues.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with library patrons and staff in a consistently friendly and efficient manner.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently.
• Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
• Competency in using computers, office applications, and library-related software.
• Strength to push fully loaded carts of library materials and to lift library materials weighing up to 40 pounds (reasonable accommodations may apply)

Responsibilities

• Provides courteous and professional customer service to patrons in person and over the phone.
• Registers new library patrons, checks in/out materials, answers calls, and assists patrons with library services.
• Maintains confidentiality of patron records.
• Promotes upcoming programs and electronic resources.
• Collaborates with Lead Clerk on library events and programs.
• Provides reference, interlibrary loan, readers’ advisory, and referral services.
• Keeps up-to-date with library technology, policies, and staff notes.
• Performs opening and closing procedures.
• Fetches and processes materials for holds.
• Shelves materials and maintains organization.
• Contributes to work-related discussions.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
