Job summary

Newport News Public Schools is seeking an Automotive Tire Technician responsible for repair, maintenance, and replacement of tires on buses and support vehicles. The role mounts/demounts tires, inspects wear, tests performance, and coordinates supplies, while following safety standards.

Evening, night, and weekend work may be required as part of emergency road calls. Responsibilities include road tests, tire rotation, balancing, and operating specialized tire equipment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with automotive tire experience.
• Valid Virginia CDL to operate a school bus or tow vehicles.
• CDL, towing, forklift, and Virginia Vehicle Inspector certifications per hire.
• Knowledge of tire repair, safety practices, and industry standards.
• Ability to diagnose tire defects and read shop manuals.

Responsibilities

• Prepare tires for installation and ensure proper air pressure.
• Inspect, test, and determine repair viability for tires.
• Repair tubes and tubeless tires with patches and boots.
• Road test vehicles after tire work.
• Rotate tires and balance assemblies; perform preventive maintenance.
• Respond to emergency road calls and tow vehicles.
• Operate diagnostic equipment and tire machinery.
• Maintain tire inventory and prepare paperwork.
