Job summary

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue is seeking a Fleet Technician to support preventive maintenance on our district vehicles and apparatus. The role includes advanced diagnostics, repairs, and fabrications to meet department needs, with a focus on safety and reliability.

The technician will document work, coordinate with internal customers, and assist with transport and light shop tasks, contributing to high-quality service for our fire and EMS operations.

Job description

It's not just about a job, it's about having a career where you can answer the call and make a difference! This Fleet Technician position is a NEW addition to our growing fleet maintenance team. Fleet Technicians perform preventive maintenance procedures and complete advanced-level repairs to District automobiles, light-duty vehicles, apparatus, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

Performs preventative maintenance procedures on light-duty staff vehicles, heavy-duty fire apparatus, and various auxiliary apparatus and equipment.

DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR

Performs advanced level diagnostics and corrective maintenance procedures on light-duty staff vehicles, heavy-duty fire apparatus, and various auxiliary apparatus and equipment. Systems include but are not limited to electrical, drive train, hydraulics, suspension, tires, brakes, engine emissions, fire suppression, and vehicle accessories. Obtains information and communicates with vendors to understand technical specifications and procedures, and ordering technically-specific parts. Communicates directly with internal customers to understand concerns and inform diagnosis as well as updating status of repairs and maintenance.

OPERATES APPARATUS

Performs road tests, and operates staff vehicles, heavy-duty fire apparatus, and various auxiliary apparatus for preventative maintenance, diagnostic procedures, annual testing, and repair confirmation.

DESIGN, FABRICATION, INSTALLATION

Communicates with internal customers to understand functional needs. Designs, fabricates, and installs a variety of items as necessary for special projects, vehicle set-ups, and modifications

DOCUMENTATION

Digitally records labor, parts, and comments to reflect all maintenance and repairs performed.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

• Transports vehicles and equipment throughout the Portland Metro area as needed to District maintenance facilities, outside vendor establishments, and customer locations. May pick up and deliver parts from local vendors as directed.
• Assists with maintenance and cleaning tasks at the Logistics Service Center.
• Participates in Divisional project development as assigned.
• May perform maintenance, repair, and annual certification on various types of District equipment as assigned.

EDUCATION

• High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).
• An associate degree in automotive and/or diesel technology is preferred.

EXPERIENCE

• Three (3) years experience as a general technician with demonstrated experience in all onboard systems.
• Five (5) years of experience is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSURES

• Current, valid Oregon Class B commercial driver's license (Class A preferred) with air brake and tank endorsements and maintain a driving record insurable by the District's insurer. Incumbents will have eighteen (18) months to obtain this qualification.
• EVT Level III certification is preferred.
• A basic welding certificate in mild steel or aluminum is preferred.

POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

• Manual dexterity and close attention to detail.
• Ability to complete small fabrication projects using mild steel and aluminum materials. Some welding may be required for these projects.
• A thorough knowledge of preventative maintenance standards as outlined by NFPA publication 1911 is preferred.
• Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of most of the following systems on heavy or light-duty apparatus:
  • Heavy-duty diesel and automotive-based gasoline engines both manual and electronically controlled
  • Automatic transmissions
  • Standard automotive and heavy-duty air brakes, including disc and drum components
  • Suspension, and steering systems
  • Multiplex and 12V electrical systems
  • Computerized engine and drive train control system
  • Basic hydraulic systems
  • Climate control and air conditioning systems
  • Emissions and aftertreatment systems
• Must be able to participate in District provided training and then demonstrate proficiency in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of Fire and EMS-specific systems, including but not limited to the following:
  • Fire pumps and control systems
  • Allison Transmissions
  • Tak 4, air ride, and hydraulic suspension systems
  • All electrical systems, 12V, 120V, 240V and Multiplex
  • Aerial hydraulic systems and controls
  • Emergency lighting systems
• Thorough knowledge and ability to use tools and operate machines and equipment normally used in an automotive/heavy-duty repair shop with high safety, efficiency, and accuracy.
• Must be able to wear fall protection systems and adhere to all safety protocols. Safety training for fall protection equipment protocols will be provided by the District.
• Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane. Safety Training and certifications for forklift operation and crane operation will be offered by the District. Successful completion of these classes is required.
• Ability to organize multiple tasks and schedules simultaneously with limited supervision. Tasks involve basic journeyman-level technician decisions using reasonable judgment and common sense commensurate with communicated expectations, specific direction, stated instructions, and District guidelines.

ADDITIONAL

• Ability to perform those physical activities required for essential functions. See Physical requirements document.
• The District does not provide tools to the Fleet Technicians but rather expects each Fleet Technician to provide a set of tools for use in the shop. See Minimum recommended tool list.
• The Fleet Technicians may request reimbursement for the purchase of tools required to perform District work up to a fiscal year annual limit of $360. However, NEW employees will have a limit of up to $600 in the first year of employment.

COMPENSATION

The monthly salary range for this position is $7,005 - $9,477 per month. Per the collective bargaining agreement, the starting pay assignment for this position is the entry step of $7,005 per month.

Monday-Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm

WORK LOCATION

The position primarily works onsite at TVF&R's Logistics Service Center located at 9991 SW Avery St, Tualatin, OR 97062.
