Job description

Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to oversee the daily operation of skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of gasoline or diesel driven engines and related auto equipment, machinery, and tools. Employees in this classification perform in a lead capacity and are responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of garage facilities and equipment and the efficiency of operations. Work includes performing and Fleet Technician duties.

  1. Supervises, prioritizes, and oversees the overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, mowers, mechanical equipment, and other gasoline and diesel driven engines.
  2. Prioritizes and inspects repair and maintenance work performed by Fleet Technicians.
  3. Prepares performance evaluations of subordinate Fleet Technicians.
  4. Maintains active communication with various departments regarding vehicle and equipment status.
  5. Maintains records, reports, and manuals such as vehicle and equipment operation manuals, part reference guides, vehicle titles/registrations, and expenditure histories.
  6. Maintains inventory levels of equipment and replacement parts.
  7. Repairs and welds automotive bodies; removes, repairs, and replaces component parts or assembles automotive systems.
  8. Instructs technicians in proper repair procedures, maintains accurate records and repair history, assists with parts identification and orders, and updates the supervisor’s status of fleet operation.
  9. Services and repairs brake systems; tests and repairs electrical equipment, generators, distributors, magnetos, and starters.
  10. Repairs and replaces valves, pistons, bearings, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems, transmissions, axles, and hydraulic controls.
  11. Enforces cleanliness and functionality of garage facilities and equipment to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
  12. Trains staff in new policies and procedures to maximize garage operation efficiency; trains new personnel.
  13. Interacts with vendors and City departments concerning repairs and maintenance.
  14. Performs routine administrative functions such as maintaining service records, reviewing work orders, data entry, report processing, reviewing vendor invoices, and creating spreadsheets.
  15. Possesses knowledge of customer service principles and techniques.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, at least four (4) years of responsible Lead Technician experience in automotive and heavy equipment/machinery maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain a Class "B" with air brakes Florida Commercial Driver's License, A/C Recycling Certification, and ASE Certification of Master Technician for Cars and Light Trucks or Medium-Heavy Trucks. Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification is preferred but not required. The work environment involves everyday risks requiring standard safety precautions typical of office, meeting, training, and garage settings.
