Job description

This is responsible journeyman level maintenance and repair work to vehicles and equipment.

Work involves responsibility for safe and effective maintenance and routine repair of vehicles, light trucks, roads and grounds equipment and police vehicles. Duties include:

  1. Repairing brakes, exhausts and related components
  2. Tuning engines
  3. Changing and repairing tires
  4. Changing oil and lubricating
  5. Performing preventive maintenance

This position also has the responsibility for making standard vehicle and equipment maintenance decisions in accordance with established procedures. This work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in vehicle and equipment maintenance and routine repair.

Works under the general supervision of Fleet Supervisor, Fleet Mechanic I or II and Fleet Mechanic Crew Leader. All job functions outlined below will be performed alongside Fleet Mechanic I and II or Fleet Crew Leader.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Diagnosing/identifying vehicle and equipment malfunctions and determining corrective actions through tests and inspections
  2. Testing vehicles and equipment after repairs
  3. Verifying completion of repairs to ensure quality service deliverable
  4. Repairing brakes, exhausts and related components, as assigned
  5. Tuning engines and performing routine repairs to automobiles and trucks, as assigned
  6. Assisting Mechanic I and II and/or Fleet Mechanic Crew Leader in more difficult repairs or repairs to heavy equipment
  7. Repairing or overhauling engines, transmissions, gear trains, differentials, steering/brake/clutch/electrical systems, power takeoffs, hydraulic and pneumatic lifts and controls and related components
  8. Performing vehicle and equipment maintenance
  9. Brazing or welding sheet metal and various equipment components, such as hoppers and plows
  10. Performing state inspections, emissions inspections and routine and preventive maintenance, if current certifications are in order
  11. Performing preventative maintenance, in-service inspections and field operational evaluations, as necessary
  12. Changing and repairing tires, as necessary
  13. Performing work in a safe manner and observing all safety procedures
  14. Using all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performing basic inspection and preventative maintenance prior to use
  15. Completing job or shift report form, as assigned
  16. Performing electronic data entry of vehicle and equipment repair information through a Computerized Maintenance Management System
  17. Performing related work as required

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent or be age 15 and currently enrolled in a Vocational/Technical School that is eligible to participate in a Co-Op program that provides both liability and Workers Compensation coverage for Co-Op students. Proof of enrollment and insurance coverage will be required.
  2. Valid Class C Driver’s License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods of vehicle and equipment overhaul and repair
  2. Knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in vehicle and equipment overhaul and repair
  3. Skill in the use of mechanic’s tools
  4. Ability to perform vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair safely, effectively and efficiently
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers
  6. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn Township procedures
  7. Good ability to communicate orally
  8. Good ability to complete forms and charts
  9. Ability to stand, walk, and drive for a minimum of 1 up to 8 hours per workday
  10. Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, lift and push/pull for up to 68% of the workday
  11. Ability to climb, crawl and reach above shoulder level for up to 35% of the workday
  12. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for up to 68% of the workday and up to 100 pounds for up to 35% of the workday
  13. Ability to use both feet for operating foot controls of equipment
  14. Ability to use both hands for simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulation of tools, equipment and objects
  15. Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions around moving machinery
  16. Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions where environmental conditions may be challenging
  17. Ability to drive an automobile
