Starting Pay:

$29.14/hour, increasing to $30.57/hour after a 6-month probation period.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair city vehicles and equipment, including inspections, adjustments, and part replacements.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure safety and reliability.
  • Order required parts and salvage usable components when possible.
  • Maintain accurate records of all repair and maintenance work performed.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or vocational school graduation.
  • Apprenticeship or training in vehicle/equipment repair or equivalent experience.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation, maintenance, and mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with repair methods, tools, and trade practices.
  • Basic welding skills (arc, acetylene, torch, MIG, TIG).
  • Ability to diagnose, service, and maintain a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Skilled in the use and care of hand tools, power tools, welders, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Must provide own SAE and metric hand tools.
  • Ability to read and follow repair manuals and instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Examination Process
  • Written Examination: All applicants must pass with a minimum score of 70%.
  • Oral Interview: Passing applicants must also pass with at least 70%.
  • Veteran Points: Eligible veterans may receive 5 points added to their final score.
  • Seniority Points: 0.5 points per year of continuous AFSCME service, up to 10 points.

Residency Requirement

The position is covered under the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. Employees must reside within 50 miles of Decatur or move within 90 days after the probation period.
