Job summary

Fayetteville Public Works Commission in North Carolina seeks a Senior Fleet Operations Manager to oversee daily fleet operations, ensuring safe, reliable vehicles and equipment. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Engineering, Accounting, or related field plus: 5+ years managing complex operations and 3 years supervisory experience.
• Associate degree or technical certification in automotive/mechanical technology (or related field) plus: 9+ years relevant progressive experience including supervisory responsibilities.
• Certifications: CAFM or CPFP preferred or required based on experience level.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily fleet operations, ensuring vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and available to meet operational needs.
• Manage vehicle lifecycle activities, including acquisition, commissioning, maintenance, and replacement.
• Direct fleet maintenance, parts inventory management, and welding services.
• Develop and monitor KPIs to improve shop efficiency, resource utilization, and cost effectiveness.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement innovative solutions.
• Evaluate and implement new technologies to enhance fleet operations.
• Provide leadership and supervision to Fleet Department staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and development.
• Build a strong team culture focused on safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Lead workforce planning and succession efforts.
• Develop and manage departmental budgets, capital plans, and operational expenditures.
• Monitor contractor performance and ensure compliance with contractual and financial requirements.
• Review, negotiate, and manage vendor contracts.
• Enforce safety standards and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other regulatory requirements.
• Lead safety and training programs to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
• Partner with internal departments to understand fleet needs and deliver exceptional service.
• Respond to customer concerns and provide timely, effective solutions.
• Prepare and present operational reports, metrics, and recommendations to leadership.

What You Bring

Education & Experience

One Of The Following Is Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Engineering, Accounting, or a related field, plus:
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience managing complex operations
  • At least 3 years of supervisory/management experience

OR

• Associate degree or technical certification in automotive/mechanical technology (or related field), plus:
  • At least 9 years of relevant progressive experience, including supervisory responsibilities

Certifications

• Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) or Certified Public Fleet Professional (CPFP) preferred or required based on experience level
