Job summary

City of Durham is seeking experienced fleet maintenance personnel to repair and maintain equipment, vehicles, and related systems. The role includes monitoring, testing, welding, painting, and keeping comprehensive service records.

In addition, you may train staff, supervise lower-level workers, and act as a Service Writer connecting customers with technicians to translate needs into work orders. Emergency road support is included.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Four years of fleet/equipment maintenance experience.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license with satisfactory record.
  • NC State Inspections License within 6 months of hire.
  • ASE certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain motor equipment, inspect and test performance, weld/paint equipment, repair engines and parts, and maintain service records.
  • Assist in training staff and supervise lower-level staff as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between customers and technicians when acting as Service Writer, translating needs into work orders.
  • Respond to emergency road calls, troubleshoot complex issues, tow vehicles, and coordinate repairs with vendors.

Hiring Salary Range: $53,962.00 - $83,728.00

Work Days/Hours: 06:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Location: May be assigned to Fire Equipment Maintenance Division or Fleet Maintenance Heavy Duty Truck Division

Position devoted to providing repair and maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and related systems. Incumbents perform a broad range of specialized vehicle and equipment repair requiring advanced knowledge and experience, using independent initiative to solve technical problems. Incumbents may assist in training staff and serve as a second level of check for accuracy or supervise/lead lower-level staff. Decision-making includes how and when tasks are carried out within an operational process, limited by the selection of the process and establishment of deadlines and outcomes.

The employee will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining motor equipment, to include inspecting equipment and vehicles; running performance tests; welding and painting equipment; repairing engines and equipment parts; processing paperwork; performing service requests; performing preventative maintenance; completing work orders; and maintaining service records.

When assigned the role of Service Writer an incumbent is responsible for serving as a liaison between customers who need repairs performed on their vehicles and the technicians who will provide those repairs. While developing strong relationships with customers as a service writer, you must understand their problems and be committed to solving them. Service writers translate their customers' needs into work orders for technicians and notify customers upon completion.

  • Performs preventative maintenance operations to maintain and repair small engines; performs minor repairs on large equipment; inspects equipment and vehicles, running performance tests; welds and paints equipment; repairs engines and equipment parts; and ensures compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Responds to emergency road calls; troubleshoots complex or escalated mechanical and related issues; tows vehicles to assigned locations; and coordinates with vendors to facilitate repairs.
  • Prepares, maintains, and/or processes reports, records, work orders, and other documents; enters/updates data; gathers, compiles and reviews information; and proofs work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Monitors and maintains the shop supply inventory; orders supplies; issues tools, supplies, and equipment to maintenance and construction crews, as needed.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC).
  • Four years (4) of fleet and/or equipment maintenance experience related to assignment.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record
  • North Carolina State Inspections License within 6 months of hire.
  • ASE certifications.
  • North Carolina State Inspections License.
