Job description

Job Title: Heavy-Duty Truck and Equipment Mechanic

We are seeking a skilled mechanic to perform journey-level maintenance and repairs on heavy-duty trucks, off-road equipment, and fire apparatus within our Public Works department. A Class A CDL with air brake, tanker, and passenger endorsements is required, or the ability to obtain one.

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • Associate's degree, 2 years of technical/trade school or equivalent military training, and 4 years of experience in automobile, heavy truck, or equipment maintenance or repair,
  • or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and passenger endorsement.
  • Must be able to pass a City of Boise background check, driving record check, and drug screening.
  • This position is safety-sensitive and subject to drug testing requirements.
  • Must have a CDL capable of handling a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more.
Job Responsibilities
  1. Perform all duties of an entry-level mechanic, including mentoring and team coordination.
  2. Conduct preventive maintenance and safety inspections.
  3. Diagnose, document, and repair vehicle systems.
  4. Repair, rebuild, or replace components using specialty tools.
  5. Install, diagnose, and repair specialized equipment and systems.
  6. Perform fabrication and welding repairs.
  7. Coordinate services with department designees and communicate with vendors and customers.
  8. Assist with parts ordering, repair processing, and documentation.
  9. Other duties as assigned, with management’s discretion.
Additional Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Knowledge of heavy industrial equipment maintenance, safety practices, automotive systems, diagnostics, electronic and mechanical repairs, fabrication, and computer software.

Ability to follow policies, work independently, provide quality customer service, operate vehicles and equipment safely, and communicate effectively.

Must operate vehicles safely and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Eight years of relevant experience.
  • Master ASE certification in automotive and heavy truck.
  • Certification from EVT in areas like ARFF, fire truck electrical, or emergency vehicle tech.
  • Additional licenses such as Airport (SIDA), MACS, or emission testing.
Physical and Working Conditions

Frequent lifting up to 35 pounds, occasional lifting up to 75 pounds, and rare lifting up to 100 pounds. Work includes loud noise, sensory activities, and various physical movements. The environment involves indoor and outdoor conditions, extreme temperatures, hazards, and driving requirements. Accommodations can be provided for disabilities.
