Job summary

City of Austin is hiring a Fleet Equipment Technician II to perform skilled repairs on a diverse vehicle fleet, including heavy equipment and trailers. You will conduct tune-ups, preventive maintenance, wheel alignments, and use diagnostic tools in a service-centered shop environment.

Requires strong reading of manuals, safe work practices, and the ability to communicate clearly with city staff and the public.

  • Performs basic tune-ups on gasoline and diesel engines. Works on various mechanical, electrical, hydraulic/pneumatic, suspension, and cooling systems and components including, removal and reinstallation (R&R).
  • Performs repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment such as crawler loaders, backhoes, and bulldozers.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance on vehicles.
  • Performs basic wheel alignments on vehicles.
  • Operates and uses an acetylene torch in the repair of equipment.
  • Records maintenance and service information and data on designated forms.

Job Description:
Fleet Equipment Technician II
Purpose:

Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical repairs on vehicles and motorized equipment including, trailers maintained by Fleet Services

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Performs basic tune-ups on gasoline and diesel engines. Works on various mechanical, electrical, hydraulic/pneumatic, suspension, and cooling systems and components including, removal and reinstallation (R& R).

Performs repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment such as crawler loaders, backhoes, and bulldozers.

Conducts preventive maintenance on vehicles.

Performs basic wheel alignments on vehicles.

Operates and uses an acetylene torch in the repair of equipment.

Records maintenance and service information and data on designated forms.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • - Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus two (2) years of experience in a related field.
  • - Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.
  • - Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel or related certification program may substitute for required experience up to a maximum of six (6) months.
  • - OR an Associate’ degree from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • - Requires a Class \"C\" Driver's license.
  • - If required, must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of employment with the City.
  • - Must also be licensed within six (6) months of employment as a Texas State Vehicle Inspector in accordance with Texas Department of Public Safety procedures and regulations.
  • - Must be certified within six (6) months of employment with respect to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards in air conditioning service, repairs, and Freon recovery including, Freon recovery equipment operations.
Physical Requirements:
  • - Essential duties are performed in a service center environment with exposure to a variety of motorized equipment, spare parts, tools, oil and lubrication, corrosive liquids, and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • - Incumbent may be exposed to loud noise, warm and cold conditions, standing for long periods, frequent stooping and bending, and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • - Individuals will need to have good eye-and-hand coordination and read and write in dimly lit conditions.
Equipment Hand Tool Requirements
  • - An incumbent must provide his or her own hand tools including, wrenches, sockets, ratchets, toolbox, etc. as a condition of employment.
  • - The individual must meet the minimum hand tool requirements within six (6) months of employment.

Pay Range: $26.10 - $32.34

Work Schedule & Location:
  • The schedule for this position is subject to change based on business and operational needs. Shifts may vary and can include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday hours.
  • Occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work may also be required.
  • Fleet Mobility Services maintains various services centers located within Austin, TX. The role may be assigned to different locations, and the work schedule may include participation in a rotational on-call program. This may require the technician to return to work outside of regular hours or perform field repairs as needed.
Commercial Driver's License Requirement - CDL:
  • This position requires a license for the operation of commercial vehicles in the state of Texas within one hundred twenty (120) days of employment. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
