Job summary

American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) seeks a Fleet Deckhand to join our team on a full-time basis. The role involves assisting with cargo loading, rigging during tow building, and basic vessel maintenance while contributing to safe operations and a positive crew environment.

The schedule features 12-hour shifts with a rotation pattern and home every night. ACBL is a long‑standing marine transportation company committed to safety, efficiency, and responsible environmental practices.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Able to obtain TWIC card.
  • Pass pre-employment drug screen and health questionnaire.
  • Pass a physical abilities test and lift 80 lb for 200 ft without rest.
  • Maintain fitness for strenuous tasks and weather exposure.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Basic navigation and safety procedures knowledge.
  • Live within 50 miles of the fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with safe cargo loading and unloading.
  • Handle rigging during tow building, locking, and docking.
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance such as painting, cleaning, and oil/filter changes.
  • Inspect conditions to ensure crew and cargo safety.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment through teamwork and communication.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the safe loading and unloading of cargo.
  • Handle rigging during barge tow building, locking, and docking activities.
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance such as painting, cleaning, and changing oil and filters.
  • Inspect and correct conditions to ensure the safety of team members and cargo.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment through teamwork and communication.
Qualifications
  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be able to obtain a required Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
  • Pass a pre‑employment drug screen and a health questionnaire.
  • Pass a physical abilities test and be able to carry an 80‑lb wire for 200 feet without stopping or loss of balance.
  • Maintain physical fitness and the ability to perform strenuous tasks.
  • Be able to work in inclement weather, outdoors, heat, and cold.
  • Possess strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Have a basic understanding of navigation and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and adaptability to a unique work schedule.
  • Adhere to all ACBL policies, United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations, and environmental regulations.
  • Live within 50 miles of the fleet.
