Job summary

American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) is seeking a Fleet Deckhand to support safe loading, rigging, and basic vessel maintenance on inland towboats. The role includes a 12-hour rotating schedule with 7 days on day shift, 7 days on night shift, and 7 days off, and requires residing within 50 miles of the fleet.

Candidates must be 18+, possess a valid driver's license, be able to obtain a TWIC, pass drug screening and health/physical tests, and work outdoors in varying weather.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must complete a health questionnaire and pass a physical ability test.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with safe loading and unloading of cargo.
  • Handle rigging during barge tow building, locking, and docking activities.
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance such as painting, cleaning, and oil/filters changes.
  • Ensure safety of team members and cargo by inspecting and correcting conditions.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment through teamwork and communication.

Your Role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with the safe loading and unloading of cargo.
  • Handling rigging during barge tow building, locking, and docking activities.
  • Performing basic vessel maintenance such as painting, cleaning, and changing oil and filters.
  • Ensuring the safety of team members and cargo by inspecting and correcting conditions.
  • Contributing to a positive work environment through teamwork and communication.
What We Are Looking For
  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to obtain required Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
  • Must be able to pass a pre‑employment drug screen.
  • Must be able to complete health questionnaire and pass physical ability test.
  • Must be able to carry an 80lb wire for 200 feet without stopping or loss of balance.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to perform strenuous tasks.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather outdoors, heat and cold.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of navigation and security procedures.
  • Positive attitude and adaptability to a unique work schedule.
  • Adhere to all ACBL policies, United States Coast Guard (USCG), and environmental regulations.
