Job summary

The City of Brownsville is seeking an Accountant I to manage accounting for grants, trust funds, and general revenues. You will post and reconcile the general ledger, maintain financial records, and develop work methods under supervision.

The role emphasizes accuracy in fixed assets, asset depreciation, and journal entries within the ERP system. Requires a Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field; Texas Driver’s License is required.

Qualifications

• Requires a Bachelor's degree or education and training equivalent to four years of college in accounting, business, finance or related field.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and update the fixed asset register with accurate asset records.
• Conduct periodic physical inventories of fixed assets to align with the asset register.
• Use ERP system to calculate depreciation based on asset classification, useful life, and acquisition date, and verify accuracy of calculations.
• Prepare journal entries and reconciliations related to fixed assets and capital projects for the general ledger, ensuring accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end reports.
• Set up new accounts and adjust the general ledger as necessary.
• Update DebtBook with City lease information and reconcile Internal Service funds and related journal entries.
• Perform accounting functions in accordance with Federal, State, and local laws.
