Working for a world-class leader in building structures, a Schuff Steel Production Fitter-Welder brings his/her expertise and knowledge in steel and/or bridge fabrication to build some of the most complex and high-profile projects in the commercial building, bridge, and industrial sectors. Critical to the production process, this position assembles and fits drawing dimensions of various structural, plate, and mechanical materials. Welds a large variety of materials in all positions with high proficiency, utilizing full skills of the trade, including knowledge of heat reactions of structural metals, and must be certifiable. The production fitter uses a high degree of proficiency while interpreting blueprints and understanding heat reactions of structural metals. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily.

Working for a world-class leader in building structures, a Schuff Steel Production Fitter-Welder applies expertise in steel and bridge fabrication to execute complex projects in the commercial, bridge, and industrial sectors. This role involves assembling and fitting structural, plate, and mechanical materials based on drawings, welding various materials in all positions with proficiency, and ensuring quality and safety standards are met.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Follow applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC).
  2. Weld on ground level, above ground, and below ground in required positions.
  3. Prepare materials for welding by chips, peening, and grinding.
  4. Weld structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, tanks, etc., including uncommon metals under close tolerances.
  5. Straighten materials by heat or flame.
  6. Perform gouging and scarfing as needed.
  7. Pass welding tests in accordance with AWS D1.1.
  8. Interpret instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders.
  9. Read blueprints and plan fitting operations.
  10. Handle and assemble materials according to drawings, including fastening and positioning.
  11. Lay out work lines or jigs for positioning materials.
  12. Ensure work conforms to drawings and notes.
  13. Clean and finish materials by grinding or chipping.
  14. Perform burn and tack welds for assembly, including minor layout work.
  15. Mark materials with spot paints for identification.
  16. Move materials and welding equipment as needed.
  17. Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  18. Follow all safety rules and PPE requirements.
  19. Perform other routine duties as directed.

Education/Training - Work Experience

High school diploma or GED, and/or 12 months of stable work experience. Must pass required weld and fitter tests.

Specialized Knowledge – Certificates & Licenses

  • Proficiency with hand tools and welding equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, instructions, and blueprints.
  • Mathematical skills for measurements and calculations.
  • Reasoning skills for problem-solving and applying instructions.
  • Certification in AWS D1.1 weld test.
