Job summary

Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia seeks staff to mentor Scouts in fishing and merit badge programs, teaching skills and values in a hands-on outdoor setting.

You'll work with youth in camping environments, lead camp activities, and live in Staff Camp housing with Summit Staff Uniform, while adhering to safety and program policies; this role offers a unique chance to develop leadership and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18+
• Excellent communication and presentation skills with youth and adults
• Familiarity with fishing, fly fishing, and wildlife activities preferred
• Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (background check)
• Experience using Microsoft Teams for daily communication

Responsibilities

• Instruct and mentor Scouts aged 11-17 in fishing and merit badges
• Present to groups of 5-20 youths to transfer skills
• Coordinate and collect program materials and resources
• Submit accurate advancement paperwork to supervisor promptly
• Participate in camp-wide programs and activities
• Assist with setup, maintenance, and takedown of program areas
• Model the Scout Oath and Law in daily interactions
• Maintain a clean and safe work area
• Perform additional duties as assigned by SBR leadership
• Follow policies in the SBR staff handbook

Key Responsibilities

• Instruct, mentor, and engage Scouts (ages 11-17) in fishing, fly fishing, and related merit badges
• Present to groups of 5-20 Scouts (youth) to transfer knowledge and empower application of skills and concepts
• Coordinate and collect program and instructional materials and resources
• Turn in accurate advancement paperwork to supervisor in a timely manner
• Participate in camp-wide programs and activities (campfires, evening programs)
• Assist with the setup, maintenance, and takedown of program and camping areas
• Model the Scout Oath and Law in daily interactions
• Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area
• Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership
• Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook

Qualifications

• Minimum age: 18+
• Comfortable speaking and presenting in front of youth and adults
• Preferred: Previous fishing, fly fishing, and/or wildlife management experience/education and/or Scouting experience
• Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
• Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication

Physical & Practical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and hike, up to 8 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds
• Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines
• Housing: 10'x12' platform tent in Staff Camp | Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform | Work Hours: 50+

About the Summit Bechtel Reserve and the Justice National Scout Camp

The Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) is a 10,600-acre outdoor adventure and education facility located near New River Gorge National Park in southern West Virginia. As one of Scouting America's National High Adventure Bases, the Summit provides transformative experiences for Scouts and other youth.

At Justice National Scout Camp, Scouts (ages 10-17) participate in more than 80 merit badge programs in areas such as aquatics, climbing, S.T.E.M., arts and media, citizenship, and outdoor skills.
