Job summary

Summit Bechtel Reserve seeks staff to lead Ecology/Conservation, Sustainability, and Fish Camp programs at Justice National Scout Camp, mentoring Scouts aged 10–17 and guiding engaging, safe activities.

You will coordinate logistics, deliver merit badge instruction, and help with paperwork and camp-wide events while modeling the Scout Oath and Law in daily operations.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18+.
  • Leave No Trace Level II certification required (training provided).
  • Experience in environmental science, biology, ecology, conservation, or outdoor education preferred.
  • Leadership experience or Scouting/Summit experience preferred.
  • Able to obtain National Camping School Ecology/Conservation certification (training provided).
  • Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (background screening).
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership/management to the Ecology and Conservation, Sustainability, and Fish Camp areas.
  • Provide formal and informal feedback to staff, coordinate program logistics, collect program/instructional materials.
  • Instruct, mentor, and engage Scouts (ages 11-17) in ecology/conservation merit badges.
  • Present to groups of 5-20 Scouts to transfer knowledge and empower application of skills and concepts.
  • Enter or turn in accurate advancement paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Participate in camp-wide programs and activities (campfires, evening programs).
  • Manage or assist with the setup, maintenance, and takedown of program and camping areas.
  • Model the Scout Oath and Law in daily interactions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership.
  • Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook.

Position Overview

Provide high-quality advancement and enrichment experiences for Justice National Scout Camp guests in a summer camp setting by facilitating and contributing to fun, safe, and engaging programs.

Key Responsibilities

Physical & Practical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and hike, up to 8 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds
  • Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines
  • Housing: 10'x12' platform tent in Staff Camp | Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform | Work Hours: 55+

About the Summit Bechtel Reserve and the Justice National Scout Camp

The Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) is a 10,600-acre outdoor adventure and education facility located near New River Gorge National Park in southern West Virginia. As one of Scouting America's National High Adventure Bases, the Summit provides transformative experiences for Scouts and other youth.

At Justice National Scout Camp, Scouts (ages 10-17) participate in more than 80 merit badge programs in areas such as aquatics, climbing, S.T.E.M., arts and media, citizenship, and outdoor skills. They also enjoy high-adventure activities like mountain biking, rafting, and skateboarding, as well as classic camp traditions like flag ceremonies and campfires.
