Job Summary

The Fiscal Specialist, located within the Controller\'s office, performs a variety of financial accounting transaction responsibilities. This role is primarily responsible for reviewing and reconciling student and third party sponsor transactions for all campuses within the Maricopa Community College District. This role is also responsible for recording, verifying, and monitoring general ledger accounts, creating journal entries, and setting up non-financial aid item types to be applied to student and third party sponsor accounts. This position collaborates with a variety of students, the campus Student Business Services, and MCCCD staff throughout the district on an ongoing basis, as it relates to questions on various financial reporting related matters.

Essential Functions
  • Routinely performs reconciliations of the general ledger and related subsystem; reviews and verifies the accuracy of accounting records; inputs and maintains data in enterprise fiscal and student systems; performs high level account review and analysis and prepares recommendations; reviews and monitors various asset, liability, revenue, and expenditure accounts for accuracy; assists with input of journal vouchers
  • Consults and advises on recording of financial transactions; provides guidance to employees on technical accounting and financial reporting; provides resources regarding related procedures and processes; makes recommendations for implementing best practices; researches, interprets and provides technical assistance regarding fiscal and accounting regulations, laws and guidelines
  • Prepares materials for procedures and systems; responds to inquiries and provides technical support on systems; reviews and resolves internal complaints; designs and formats complex documents; composes basic original documents, correspondence, and presentations
  • Reviews accounting transactions, prepares journal entries, maintains accurate records, prepares reports, investigates and resolves discrepancies, participates in weekly and bi-weekly meetings as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

Associate\'s Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two (2) years of financial support experience in an area related to assignment such as fiscal, finance, accounts receivable/payable or payroll.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and/or experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Three (3) or more years reconciling large volumes of complex data
  2. Two (2) or more years working in a higher educational or government setting
  3. Two (2) or more years of experience with PeopleSoft Student Information System (SIS) and PeopleSoft Financial Management System (FMS) or similar ERP system
  4. Two (2) or more years working with Nelnet Campus Commerce
  5. Two (2) or more years experience with third party billing
  6. Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills (vlookups/pivot tables)
  7. One year of full-time relevant MCCCD experience during the previous two years
Special Working Conditions
  • May be required to sit for a prolonged period of time; viewing a computer monitor
  • May be required to work nights and/or weekends
  • May be required to lift 30 lbs
