Job summary

Spotsylvania County is seeking candidates for the Firefighter Recruit Academy. Recruits will train in fire suppression, emergency medical care, specialized rescue, and hazardous materials response under the FREM standards.

They will inspect and maintain equipment, operate emergency apparatus, and participate in public safety education while preparing for promotion to Firefighter. Successful graduates will advance to Firefighter.

Qualifications

• Must have High School Diploma or GED.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must obtain and maintain all certificates contained within the County's FREM Recruit Academy curriculum (EMT-B, CPR, Firefighter I, II, etc.).
• Must successfully obtain and maintain a Driver Pump Operator certification within 60 months of employment.
• Non-ALS graduates must complete EMT-1/EMT-P and related precepting requirements within set time.
• ALS graduates must complete FREM ALS precepting program within the designated time.

Responsibilities

• Respond to fire and emergency medical calls; determine initial actions and deploy resources.
• Inspect and maintain equipment; test hoses and pumps; load/unload apparatus after responses.
• Train to drive and operate a variety of fire vehicles and ambulances.
• Perform maintenance on vehicles, equipment, station facilities, and tools.
• Engage in public safety education and community outreach as part of duties.
