The City of Montgomery, AL is seeking entry-level firefighters to combat, extinguish, and prevent fires, while operating and maintaining fire suppression equipment. The role includes responding to emergencies, performing search and rescue, and providing basic life support when needed.
Applicants must complete 16 weeks of recruit school and meet physical, behavioral, and medical requirements. Background checks and drug testing are required; smoking restrictions apply beginning on employment date.
This is entry-level firefighting work combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and operating and maintaining fire suppression apparatus and equipment. Work requires strenuous physical exertion under adverse conditions such as hazardous materials or cramped surroundings. Employees are also responsible for participating in daily training activities, inspecting and maintaining equipment and apparatus and cleaning and maintaining quarters. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Fire Lieutenant or Captain.
Responds to emergency incidents and conducts fire suppression operations to include search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, hose operations such as protecting exposures and salvage and overhaul while wearing breathing apparatus and turnout gear.
Performs ladder operations to include removing, raising or extending, carrying and replacing ground and extension ladders of various sizes ranging from 10-to-50 feet using acceptable methods and techniques in order to conduct suppression or rescue operations.
Assesses patient condition and administers basic life support care or assists in providing advanced life support in order to maintain airway, breathing, and circulation using accepted methods and techniques and appropriate medical equipment.
Participates in company training and fitness programs daily and reviews manuals, policies and procedures, maps, etc. in order to maintain readiness for emergency responses.
Responds to hazardous materials incidents and determines method of approaching hazard based on recognition and identification efforts.
Drives and operates ladder or engine to include spotting apparatus correctly based on obstructions, accessibility, safety, and size-up and prepares truck or engine for suppression or rescue operations.
Performs aerial ladder operations to include spotting, operating, extending and lowering 110 foot aerial ladders using appropriate methods and techniques in order to conduct suppression or rescue operations.
Inspects and maintains equipment, apparatus and station quarters in clean and safe condition, prepares documentation as needed, and performs assigned duties or duties as assigned by company officer or as required by department rules, regulations, policies, procedures or common practices.
Must complete 16 weeks of training in the Montgomery Fire Department Recruit School.
