Job summary

Gwinnett County is hiring a Firefighter/Paramedic Trainee to be trained and certified for duties across the department under supervision. Responsibilities include responding to fires, accidents, medical emergencies, inspections, and training activities to protect life and property.

The role is safety-sensitive and requires pre-employment drug testing, background checks, and ongoing random testing per policy. Training will prepare reports and operate or inspect fire equipment and ambulances.

Responsibilities

• Assist in fire suppression and life rescue using fire apparatus and equipment.
• Assist in/perform emergency medical care including patient assessment and basic pharmacology per guidelines.
• Relay medical information to physicians, nurses, and ER staff.
• Prepare fire and patient care reports under supervision.
• Assist with operation, inspection and maintenance of fire apparatus and stations; monitor ambulance condition and inventory.
• Deliver fire and life safety education programs to the public.
• Answer citizens' questions and participate in training programs.

Job description

This class is to train and certify Firefighter/Paramedic Trainees in the responsibilities for performing duties in an assigned division of the department under the supervision of an officer or senior firefighter. These duties include responding to fires, accidents, and medical emergencies to protect life and property; participating in fire inspection, fire prevention activities, station maintenance, and training activities; and performing related work as required.This job is a safety sensitive position and will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy.

Applicants must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including criminal, controlled substance, driving, employment hsitory checks, an oral interview, medical exam, drug testing, and psychological and physical agility testing.

• Assists in the performance of fire suppression and life rescue, utilizing a variety of equipment to contain and extinguish fire or mitigate other emergencies such as hazardous materials' incidents and technical rescues.
• Assists in, or provides, emergency medical care after performing patient assessment to include advanced assessment, airway management, and pharmacological administration utilizing department medical guidelines.
• Assists with conveying, or provides, medical information obtained from assessment to other medical professionals including physicians, nurses, and emergency room medical staff.
• Receives training in order to independently prepare fire and patient care medical reports.
• Assists in the operation, inspection and maintenance of variety of fire apparatus and fire stations. Operates and inspects ambulance to ensure proper working conditions. Monitors inventory usage and documentation for compliance.
• Delivers fire and life safety prevention programs to educate the public.
• Assists citizens with their general questions and concerns.
• Participates in regularly scheduled training programs.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
