Job summary

The Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority is seeking an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) firefighter at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Allentown, PA. This full-time role responds to aircraft incidents, hazmat events, structural fires and medical emergencies, and operates ARFF apparatus to perform rescue and suppression tasks.

Ideal candidates hold NFPA 1 & 2, with EMT preferred and must complete certification within 12 months.

Qualifications

Job Location: Lehigh Valley International Airport - Allentown, PA, Position Type: Full Time, Salary Range: Undisclosed, Job Shift: Open Availability, Job Category: Protective Services

Positions in the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) department provide immediate response to rescue/ extrication, fire suppression, hazard mitigation and medical assistance emergencies at the airport servicing structures, aircraft, crew, passengers, and employees.

Essential Functions

• Respond to all actual, potential, or simulated aircraft, hazardous materials (HAZMAT), structural and EMS incidents at Lehigh Valley International Airport and make decisions determining the best method of response.


• Serve as driver/operator of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles at Lehigh Valley International Airport.Drive and maneuver vehicles to the most advantageous position for aircraft rescue.


• Prevent and/or extinguish fires and rescue aircraft crew and passengers.


• Operate pumps and perform firefighting, rescue, and salvage operations.


• Perform all required duties to prevent or extinguish aircraft or structural fires, rescue, emergency medical services and resuscitation while in the presence of hazardous work conditions, or in the operation of hazardous materials, equipment, vehicles, or other types of rescue operations.


• Respond to medical emergencies involving airport patrons and/or employees.


• In the absence of a Lieutenant, Captain, or Chief on duty, this position will assume responsibilities as the “Acting Lieutenant”.


• Professionally communicate over two-way radio, telephone, and email.


• Possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Additional Responsibilities

• Inspect fire apparatus, tools and emergency medical equipment and maintain in good working condition. Perform inspections of buildings, structures, fueling facilities and fueling vehicles for fire safety hazards and the elimination of such hazards.


• Maintain fire station and surrounding areas in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition.Work with other ARFF employees on an assigned shift schedule.


• Prepare reports.


• Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).


• NFPA Firefighter Certification 1 & 2 required.


• Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) Certification preferred.


• Pennsylvania EMT Certification preferred, must obtain EMT certification within 12 months of hire.


• Hazardous Materials Operations Level Certificate required


• NIMS IC-100, IC-200, IC-70, and IC-800 Certificates required


• Minimum of 3 years of Interior Firefighting experience


• PC skills including Word, Excel, Outlook and other applicable computer programs.


• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills.


• Thorough knowledge of the operation and use of fire equipment and vehicles.


• Ability to independently analyze situations and adopt a quick and effective course of action.


• Able to respond and perform in emergency situations and severe weather conditions.


• Possess a valid driver’s license.

Must- Have Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.


• Must wear uniforms provided (uniforms must be clean and presentable) and personal protective equipment.


• Must maintain a valid driver’s license that meets insurance requirements


• Must be available to work 24 hour shifts, split shifts, nights, weekends and holidays when required.


• Successfully pass continual training, security and employment requirements


• Must possess acceptable English language skills to include speaking, reading, writing and comprehension.


• Ability to regularly sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance; stoop, kneel and crouch or crawl.


• Must be able to use hands and fingers to type, handle bags, boxes, objects or controls.


• Ability to, unassisted, lift50 - 100 pounds ground to chest, carry 75 – 150 pounds, and drag 150 pounds.


• Vision abilities include, with or without corrective lenses, close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


• Sufficient auditory ability, with or without audiological devices, to decipher telephone/radio communications, interact with the public and others, and hear alarms, including vehicle and other warning signals.


• Able to tolerate exposure to noise levels up to 150 decibels at times, hearing protection is provided and optional.


• Have the physical ability and awareness to safely navigate in and around equipment and aircraft.


• Able to tolerate exposure to air fuels, exhaust, de-icing chemicals, and firefighting.


• Able and willing to work in inclement weather, including extreme cold and warm temperatures.
