Job summary

The City of Galveston seeks a Firefighter/Engineer to respond to emergency calls for fire, rescue and EMS, and to participate in fire code enforcement, public education and station maintenance.

Under general supervision, you will operate fire apparatus, prepare activity reports, conduct equipment checks, and support public safety through training and community programs.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent; AND graduation from an accredited fire academy; OR equivalent education/experience.
• TCFP Intermediate Fire certification; Intermediate EMT certification; Class B Texas Driver’s License.
• Work in indoor/outdoor environments with exposure to hazards; ability to lift up to 150 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents; provide rescue and EMS services.
• Operate fire apparatus to respond to calls and perform firefighting tasks.
• Prepare activity reports and conduct vehicle/equipment checks.
• Maintain fire station and perform building/grounds upkeep.
• May serve as acting Fire Engineer when needed; conduct public tours and trainings.

Job Description SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, responds to emergency calls for service, including fire, rescue and emergency medical services; participates in fire code enforcement, public education and fire station and equipment maintenance activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents; provides rescue and fire suppression; performs emergency medical and first aid services.
• Operates fire apparatus to respond to emergency service calls.
• Prepares activity reports.
• Conducts vehicle and equipment checks.
• Maintains the assigned fire station; performs general building and grounds maintenance as necessary.
• May serve as an acting Fire Engineer as necessary.
• Conducts station tours for the public, school and community demonstrations and programs.
• Participates in required training sessions.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
• Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent; AND graduation from an accredited fire academy; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

• TCFP Intermediate Fire certification.
• Intermediate EMT certification.
• Possession of a valid Class B Texas Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May have exposure to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 150 pounds.
