Fire Sprinklers FLS Sys Technician
Join the Facilities Operations and Maintenance team at The University of Texas at Austin, a highly responsive and knowledgeable crew providing outstanding service for Facilities Services and the university community. This position supports the university’s operations by maintaining fire‑life‑safety equipment and systems.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on fire sprinkler systems, including inspections and repairs.
- Assist with fire alarm inspections and new system commissioning.
- Provide timely and courteous customer service, keeping supervisors and team members updated on daily work-order status.
- Complete paperwork accurately and timely, including equipment information for UT Works updates.
- Train shop members and use leadership skills to advance shop goals.
- Keep current on code changes, testing procedures, and product knowledge; read and interpret drawings and technical manuals.
- Support outages, coordinate with contractors and emergency personnel, and investigate system failures during actual fires.
- Generate material lists, acquire materials efficiently, and maintain accurate records of usage.
- Perform organization and cleaning tasks to maintain safe and efficient work areas; participate in the On‑Call Program.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduation or GED.
- Four years of journey‑level experience in installation, repair, maintenance, or operation of fire sprinkler systems.
- NICET Level II certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in a technical field or equivalent experience.
- More than four years of relevant experience.
- Experience at the University of Texas or in a university setting.
- Excellent communication and customer‑service skills.
- Computer experience and knowledge of a computerized service‑request system.
- Proven ability to work with a multidisciplinary trade team.
- Graduated from a leadership program.
- NICET Level III or above certification in fire sprinkler or fire alarm.
- Completion of the Facilities Services Leader Development program.
Salary Range
$52,255 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
Multiple shifts available, 40 hours per week. Night Shift: Mon‑Fri 03:30 PM‑12:00 AM. Weekend Shift: Fri‑Mon 06:00 AM‑04:30 PM. May include overtime any day, including holidays. Work may involve:
- Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment.
- All weather and extreme temperatures.
- Chemical fumes and biohazards.
- Electrical and mechanical hazards.
- Repetitive keyboard use, manual dexterity, stair and ladder climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts.
- Exposure to loud noise, high dust, allergens.
- Use of electronic devices and job‑related equipment.
- On‑call program participation.
