Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking a Fire Safety Specialist to join the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team. The role focuses on conducting fire and life safety assessments, providing training, and developing guidelines to reduce campus risk.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field, a current Fire Inspector I certification, and 3–5 years of fire safety experience, preferably in higher education.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
• Current Fire Inspector I certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
• Minimum of 3 to 5 years of fire safety experience or equivalent combination of experience and/or education.
• Prior experience in a higher education setting, research facility, hospital system, or other campus environment preferred.
• Experience with fire protection and life safety systems.
• Experience in delivering fire safety education programs.
• Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Performs fire and life safety assessments of assigned buildings to identify potential fire hazards and fire code compliance issues.
• Documents assessment findings and works with campus partners to remediate identified issues.
• Provides fire safety training for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
• Assists with the development and implementation of fire safety guidelines and community risk reduction initiatives.
• Conducts periodic fire/emergency evacuation drills.
• Manages the “hot work” and “fire protection system impairment” permit programs.
• Participates in the EHS emergency “on call” program.
• Maintains accurate recordkeeping and provides status updates to the supervisor on a periodic basis.
• Provides support and assists other EHS professional staff in resolving safety and health issues (including indoor air quality investigations, etc.).
• Other duties as assigned.
