Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) offers an internship that provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan. The internship supports a variety of fire protection projects at LANL, including design reviews and life-safety analyses.

The program seeks engineering students with a minimum 3.0 GPA, enrolled in accredited baccalaureate programs, and willing to complete required credits and a drug test.

Job description

What You Will Do

This internship provides mentoring, hands‑on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's engineering education. The fire protection office is seeking students to support a variety of projects around Los Alamos National Laboratory including:

  • Support review of fire protection system designs and calculations, including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm, and special hazard systems.
  • Analyze life safety requirements for buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations, and components of the means of egress.
  • Perform on-site fire protection system evaluations and participate in final system testing.
  • Inspect buildings for hazard assessment and compliance.
  • Perform building and fire code analyses and interpretations. Prepare fire hazards analysis and engineering evaluation documents.
  • Interface with facility project personnel and coordinate project designs with other engineering disciplines.
  • Perform analyses of existing fire protection systems to determine capabilities, shortcomings, and solutions to rectify deficiencies.
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in any engineering discipline. Engineering degree in greatest demand include Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, and Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester (or equivalent of full-time enrollment).
  • Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale. Note: Students must provide the program coordinator with current, official transcripts annually to remain eligible. See the Annual Transcript & Salary Review Process section for additional information.
  • Pass a new employment drug test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.
  • Basic knowledge along with any class project experience with analysis or testing in one or more of the following STEM areas: Biology, Chemistry, Coding, Manufacturing, Physics, Nuclear, Materials, Math, Data acquisition and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written communications.

  • Previous experience in building design, construction, facilities, fire protection, or the fire service.
  • Enrolled in a fire protection engineering or engineering technology graduate degree program.
Education/Experience

Position requires a to be enrolled in an undergraduate program in STEM from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

No Clearance

Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
