Job Overview

Los Alamos National Laboratory invites you to join the Engineering Services – Fire Protection Systems team as a Fire Protection Specialist. You will coordinate elements of the laboratory fire protection program, including suppression and alarm system operations, in compliance with current codes, standards, DOE orders, and best industry practice. Responsibilities include conducting facility surveillances, assisting with site‑wide fire alarm operations, reviewing authorization basis documentation, researching information for fire protection and code compliance activities, and tracking facility ITM efforts.



Fire Protection Specialist 2

Salary: $80,400 – $127,900.



  • Design, plan review/approval, and commissioning of complex building fire detection and alarm systems.

  • Develop and maintain a stand‑alone fire alarm receiving system computer/server network and facility fire detection and alarm system operations and maintenance procedures.

  • Communicate the results of fire detection and alarm system design to project managers, project/facility engineers, and facility managers.

  • Assist in researching responses to fire alarm system–related queries by internal and external entities.

  • Significant experience performing fire detection and alarm system design, record management, and design drawing specification documentation completion.

  • Working knowledge of the operation of automatic sprinkler, special hazard, fire pump, and ventilation systems as they relate to fire detection and alarm system design and operation.

  • Design, modify, program, and test fire detection and alarm systems.



Fire Protection Specialist 3

Salary: $87,800 – $143,000.



  • Lead fire protection and loss prevention related organizational strategies, goals, and metrics. Determine their effectiveness and future modifications when necessary.

  • Represent the laboratory to enforcement agencies, other DOE laboratories, and community organizations.

  • Review and analyze concerns and possible complaints and recommend corrective action where needed.

  • Respond to unique, one‑of‑a‑kind external/internal requests for information and/or documents relating to worker health and safety, fire protection, and loss prevention issues and inquiries.

  • Serve as an audit liaison for the fire protection program and respond to inquiries from the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Inspector General, Department of Energy, and/or Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.

  • Take the lead in developing reports to meet management needs at all levels and in response to external inquiries.

  • Serve as the lead liaison in developing fire protection and loss prevention performance goals and objectives for the institution.



Minimum Job Requirements


  • Teamwork and Leadership – Experience working in a complex organization of diverse operations, combined with a demonstrated ability to function collaboratively with varying teams.

  • Operational Functions – Demonstrated experience working with customers in fire protection disciplines; proven ability in providing professional guidance in interpreting regulations and policies to ensure compliance; demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining documents such as procedures, forms, templates, and/or plans.

  • Computer Business Systems – Demonstrated proficiency in the use of common computer‑based software, shared database applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe Products, Access, Outlook, Oracle, Blue Beam, etc.); experience with the operations, maintenance, testing and surveillance of stand‑alone computer/server network systems.

  • Communications/Customer Service – Demonstrated ability leading professional communications and meetings with all levels of personnel, including external interfaces; ability to provide consultative customer service to internal and external customers; skilled written and oral communication that conveys consideration for the unique needs of different audiences.

  • Technical Expertise – Demonstrated experience with appropriate fire and sprinkler design qualifications, plans examiner experience or certifications, code inspector experience or certification.

  • Training/Certifications – Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the application of the International Building and Fire Codes, NFPA codes and standards, life safety and loss prevention standards as they relate to fire detection and alarm systems; NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist curriculum completion within one year of hire date.

  • Education & Experience at Fire Protection Specialist 2 – Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

  • Education & Experience at Fire Protection Specialist 3 – Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Post‑graduate coursework may be desirable.



Desired Qualifications


  • DOE Q‑Clearance

  • NICET Qualifications or Certification

  • Recognized Fire Alarm and/or Sprinkler Design certifications

  • Experience with Fire Alarm Panel design, installation, or maintenance

  • Experience with LANL policy and procedures

  • Experience as Team or Program Lead

  • Experience working under DOE Order 420.1C, DOE Order 1066, and DOE Order 151.1D



Work Location

Onsite, Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.



Work Schedule

This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift or weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
