Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an Engineering Technologist at level 3 or 4 to support fire protection and life safety across our nuclear and nonnuclear facilities in Los Alamos, NM. The role includes technical reviews, hazard analyses, plan reviews, and program oversight.

Higher level duties emphasize mentoring, program leadership, and collaboration with safety professionals to maintain standards and ensure compliance with DOE directives and NFPA codes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field with 8+ years of related experience.
  • Higher level requires 12 years of related experience or equivalent.
  • Active Q Clearance and professional engineer certification are desirable.
  • Proven leadership in mentoring junior engineering staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provide fire protection and life safety SME technical support to facility management and programmatic groups.
  • Prepare and maintain fire hazard analyses and related documentation for complex facilities.
  • Conduct plan reviews, project support, and acceptance testing of fire protection systems.

What You Will Do

The Engineering Services Division Fire Protection Engineering Group (ES-FPE) is the Laboratory's central fire protection engineering and program support entity, responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Lab's nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. This position will be filled at either Engineering Technologist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Engineering Technologist 3 ($106,400 - $176,000). The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but duties are not necessarily limited to:

  • Provide fire protection and life safety subject matter expert (SME) technical support.
  • to the laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations.
  • Prepare and maintain fire hazard analyses and related documentation for complex.
  • laboratory, radiological, and nuclear facilities.
  • Construction project support, plan review and approval.
  • Lab-wide fire alarm system operations and maintenance.
  • Wild land fire risk reduction initiatives.
  • Performing facility fire protection and life safety system assessments.
  • Fire protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing and maintenance oversight.
  • Preparation of equivalencies and exemptions, development of equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes.
  • Technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence.
Engineering Technologist 4 ($117,200 - $195,400)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the primary duties of this position include:

  • Sustain and monitor fire protection engineering and loss prevention programs.
  • Implement facility and program fire protection assessment/surveillance programs.
  • Mentoring and technical leadership of staff.
  • Interface with nuclear facility safety basis professionals.
  • Maintain Laboratory fire protection engineering and maintenance standards.

Engineering Technologist 4 ($117,200 - $195,400)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the primary duties of this position include:

  • Sustain and monitor fire protection engineering and loss prevention programs.
  • Implement facility and program fire protection assessment/surveillance programs.
  • Mentoring and technical leadership of staff.
  • Interface with nuclear facility safety basis professionals.
  • Maintain Laboratory fire protection engineering and maintenance standards.
This position at the higher level requires working with all levels of Laboratory management and representing the Division and Laboratory to internal customers, external agencies, and community organizations. As a senior level position, the candidate will review, recommend actions, and provide leadership on fire protection and loss prevention related issues for the Laboratory.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrative ability to perform detailed technical reviews of fire protection design documents including plans, submittals, project specs and similar documents and provides input back to the design team to ensure design construction meets applicable requirements.
  • Advanced experience in effectively communicating compliance concerns both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and/or craft personnel.
  • Expert experience in: Design or plans review of fire protection and life safety features of building and of fire protection systems; or Documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks of facilities or processes.
  • Proven leadership in supporting and mentoring more junior engineering staff.
Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 4:
  • Demonstrated leadership aptitude including clear focus on professional customer service, as well as regulatory compliance.
  • Experience in evaluating fire protection needs, concerns, and requirements to solve complex problems through creative problem solving and appropriate compromise.
  • Experience in developing processes, program, or project documentation to incorporate and/or implement fire protection or life safety objectives and criteria.
Education/Experience Lower Level:

Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience Higher Level:

Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Active Q Clearance
  • Certification as Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Plans Examiner, and/or Certified Fire Inspector (NFPA or ICC).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
  • Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly-protected risks (HPR); such as FM Global datasheets, or AXA XL property risk guidelines.
  • Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard, and nuclear facilities.
  • Reactor or nonreactor nuclear facility experience.
  • Knowledge of DOE-O-420.1C, DOE-STD-1066, LANL Engineering Standards Manual, and Conduct of Engineering (CoE) work principles.
Work Location:

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2:

Clearance: Q

Position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test:

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
