Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory seeks an undergraduate intern in the Occupational Safety & Health Division. The student will assist safety professionals with evaluations, data collection, documentation, and field observations to identify and reduce health hazards.

Under supervision, you will learn about industrial hygiene, laboratory safety programs, and LANL requirements while contributing to real-world safety improvements on site in Los Alamos, NM.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate student with at least 12 credit hours or full-time equivalent.
  • Cumulative GPA must be at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Entering first-year students must show matriculation into an accredited program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist experienced Industrial Hygiene and Safety staff with safety-related tasks.
  • Conduct workplace safety evaluations and data collection.
  • Help with documentation and field observations of safety hazards.
  • Learn industrial hygiene concepts and how safety programs are applied in real-world settings.

Occupational Safety & Health Division is currently seeking motivated undergraduate students looking for challenging, paid undergraduate internship opportunities. Our student internships provide hands‑on technical experience and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.

What You Will Do

Occupational Safety & Health Division is currently seeking motivated undergraduate students looking for challenging, paid undergraduate internship opportunities. Our student internships provide hands‑on technical experience and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study. The student will work with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Division and assist experienced Industrial Hygiene and Safety professionals with activities that help keep LANL employees and work areas safe and healthy. Under the guidance of experienced staff, the student may assist with workplace safety evaluations, data collection, documentation, field observations, and other activities related to identifying and reducing workplace health and safety hazards. The student will have opportunities to learn about industrial hygiene, occupational safety, Laboratory requirements, and how safety programs are applied in real-world work environments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy coupled with outstanding critical thinking skills.
  • Experience working effectively as part of a team with a willingness to assist and support other team members as needed; and have the ability to work independently.
  • Basic knowledge and implementation of required safety practices in a laboratory environment.
  • Basic knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Ability to research information sources (i.e., material safety data sheets, health hazard information module (HHIM), regulations, standards, other agencies and experts) for health effects data applicable to work operations.
  • Ability to use automation applications (i.e., spreadsheets, graphics, database management, communication practices, compliance tracking systems).
  • Basic experience utilizing equipment and tools
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Education/Experience
  • Currently enrolled (12 semester credit hours or full-time equivalent) in an accredited undergraduate degree-granting program (or international equivalent);
  • Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
  • Entering first-year students must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an accredited undergraduate degree program.
Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance

Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Internal Applicants

Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
