Job summary

Schnackel Engineers, Inc. is seeking a Fire Protection Designer in Omaha, NE to develop fire sprinkler plans and specifications for North America using our AI for MEP® platform. You will design protection systems, create device layouts, and perform calculations to support project decisions.

Responsibilities include coordinating with the design team and clients, maintaining schedules, and reviewing submittals. Strong communication, organization, and independent work habits are essential.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited degree in Fire Protection Technology, Engineering Technology, CAD, or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Mechanical, Electrical or Fire Protection.
  • NICET Level III or higher credentials are preferred or required.
  • Engineer-Intern (EI) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) credentials in Fire Protection Engineering are desirable.
  • Experience with fire sprinkler design, pumps and standpipe systems for MEP/FP projects.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 72 and related standards; familiarity with AutoSprink or similar software.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with client and MEP/FP/IT design team to ensure design aligns with the client’s vision and schedule.
  • Participate in meetings and conference calls as needed.
  • Familiarize yourself with applicable codes for projects.
  • Create fire protection construction documents using AutoCAD and related software.
  • Design fire protection systems and select devices and equipment.
  • Prepare fire alarm device layouts and riser diagrams.
  • Perform calculations to support design decisions.
  • Coordinate with utilities, equipment vendors, and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Review submittals for contractual compliance and conflicts with other systems.
  • Provide construction administration (RFI responses) and mentoring for colleagues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with the client, the MEP/FP/IT design team, and other consultants to ensure the design is consistent with the client’s vision, to identify and resolve areas of conflict, to ensure a fully coordinated interdisciplinary design, and to ensure the design schedule is maintained.
  • Participate in meetings and conference calls when deemed necessary.
  • Become familiar with the codes that are applicable to the project.
  • Use AutoCAD and other software to create fire protection construction document packages which include drawings, construction specifications, and reports.
  • Design fire protection systems including all associated devices, equipment, and specifications.
  • Prepare superior quality fire alarm device layouts and riser diagrams.
  • Perform all required calculations to support design decisions.
  • Coordinate with local utility companies to provide the required utility services to the project.
  • Coordinate with equipment vendors and manufacturer’s representatives for selection and specification of appropriate equipment.
  • Coordinate with location jurisdictions from the point of preliminary design through the permitting process and construction completion.
  • Review fire protection submittal documents for contractual compliance and areas of conflict with all building systems.
  • Provide construction administration (CA) services, including answering requests for information (RFIs).
  • Provide mentoring and guidance for colleagues.
What We Are Looking For
  • In possession of an ABET-accredited degree in Fire Protection Technology, Engineering Technology, Computer Aided Drafting, or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Mechanical, Electrical or Fire Protection.
  • In possession of, or ability to obtain, NICET Level III or higher credentials.
  • In possession of, or ability to obtain, Engineer-Intern (EI) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) credentials in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Previous fire protection design experience involving fire sprinkler, fire pumps, and standpipe systems with an MEP/FP engineering consultant or design/build contractor.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 72 codes and industry standards for fire and fire life safety.
  • Previous experience with AutoSprink Fire Sprinkler Design software or other fire sprinkler design software.
  • Exceptional communication and organization skills, including ability to prioritize tasks and multitask.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently upon receiving necessary direction and information.
