Job summary

The City of Lenexa is seeking a Fire Lieutenant or Fire Captain to lead the Fire Prevention Division’s fire prevention, life safety and investigation activities. The role requires coordination with other divisions, agencies and the public, and involves essential duties including code enforcement and public education.

Responsibilities include supervising inspections, reviewing site plans, and guiding investigation teams.

Qualifications

• Three years of experience in career fire service as a firefighter with Fire Fighter I & II and Kansas EMT certifications.
• Fire Officer I, Fire Inspector I and Fire Instructor I certifications recognized within specified time frames.
• Associate degree in fire, emergency medical science or related field; valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Leads, manages and coordinates fire prevention, life safety and fire investigation activities.
• Reviews building site plans and fire protection systems with contractors and owners.
• Interprets fire codes and issues formal complaints for non-compliance in Municipal Court when needed.
• Supervises inspections programs per codes and NFPA standards; oversees staff and volunteers.
• Develops and delivers public fire education programs to businesses, schools and community groups.
• Oversees fire investigation program from origin to cause determination and coordinates training for investigators.
