Job summary

The City of San Carlos seeks a Fire Prevention Officer who serves as a visible resource for the community and collaborates with the Redwood City Fire Department. The successful candidate will work with City departments to develop strong working relationships across agencies.

You will manage a varied workload from inspections, plan review, investigations, and public education, using sound judgment, organization and clear communication.

Qualifications

• Codes, laws and regulations related to Titles 19 and 24 of the California Administrative Code, the International Building and Fire Codes, and NFPA Fire Code Standards.
• Principles and practices of fire protection engineering.
• The fundamentals and techniques of determining fire and life safety of structures.
• Fire investigations practices, procedures, and evidence collection.

Responsibilities

• Interpret and enforce fire prevention laws and ordinances.
• Conduct periodic and follow-up inspections for fire clearances.
• Investigate complaints and issue correction orders, including weed abatement.
• Investigate origin and cause of fires and present evidence in court when required.
• Perform wildland urban interface inspections and enforce actions.
• Develop and implement a fuels management program to reduce wildfire risk.
• Be on call for fire investigations as needed.
• Provide information to the public on fire prevention practices.
• Develop and deliver training programs on fire prevention and investigations.
• Check plans for compliance with fire and life safety requirements.
